These are the two leading soft drinks in America and around the world, how did they get that way? Was it the catchy jingles, word-of-mouth, or the promotions of the products they got you drinking your favorite soft drink?
Back in the 1970s, Coke and Pepsi had whirlwind of activity as far promotion goes with the Pepsi challenge. That Pepsi challenge pitted coke against Pepsi to see what America enjoy drinking the most. These commercials were all over the TV, and they said and nine out of 10 drinkers preferred Pepsi to Coke.
Do you remember those commercials? I often wanted to sneak in, put in two glasses of Pepsi behind that blind, and see how many fools would pretend to notice a difference. Now that would have been funny.
Diet Coke has had many memorable commercials from Ray Charles signing you got the right one baby to the office women sitting, watching a window washer, and drooling over his half-naked body. Those commercials made you want to drink diet coke whether that was your favorite are not.
Pepsi for many years had the slogan the choice of a new generation. I wonder what generation they were talking about. Was that my generation or the generation of my children. My generation was not new although my children's was new but babies should not be drinking any kind of soft drink.
Both Coca-Cola and Pepsi were invented for medicinal purposes. Yes, they were over-the-counter medicines when they were first invented years ago. They claimed to cure everything from an upset stomach, diarrhea, and even malaise. It is funny how now both are considered soft drinks, and have no medicinal purposes.
Many legends surround both coke and Pepsi, and there is assorted uses. I have heard that coke dumped on blood on a highway will clean it, and I have heard the same of Pepsi. I have heard that coke will clean the rust from your toilet and strip rust off an old nail, and I have heard the same of Pepsi.
Both flat coke and Pepsi will settle an upset stomach of a pregnant woman or someone suffering from a flu bug. Perhaps, its just the extra fluid in your body that helps to settle your stomach in these cases.
Coke and Pepsi can be used interchangeably in recipes depending on what you prefer.
Basting a ham or turkey with Coke or Pepsi will both result in a sweeter meat. Both Coke and Pepsi can be used in cake mixes in place of water, or the frosting, which goes on the cake.
If you go into a grocery store, department store, and even Wal-Mart, you will see more coke because people around here prefer Pepsi. However, in most work place environments locally you can only buy Coke products. I never could understand that, if the bosses were walk into a department or grocery store they would see that the Pepsi products that sell outsell here.
Personally, I prefer Pepsi to coke, and to all those coke drinkers I say to each their own. Just do not touch my Pepsi!
