They are a talented and hardy breed. These are highly intelligent dogs that can learn very quickly, but they can also become bored easily. Airedales very badly want to be part of the family, but they can be strong willed at times and require reminders that you are the boss! Their temperament is stable and they are happy in general. Many are used as therapy dogs. The personality on an Airedale may be slightly clownish, even goofy.
The Airedale is the largest of the Terrier group, with the largest teeth, sometimes weighing over sixty pounds. They were originally bred as versatile hunting dogs, that could handle any type of terrain and soon used in the military as messenger dogs during World War I. President Harding kept his own Airedale at the White House during his presidential term. They still make excellent guard dogs today.
This special breed is energetic and needs at least 40 minutes of exercise every day. They will, like any terrier, chase any small animals they come across. Airedales are very adaptable to warm or cool weather and to any size dwelling, be it apartment or farm.
Airedales have very few health problems in general. Keep in mind that they also have a high tolerance for pain and can hide it well, so you will need to pay close attention to your dogs behavior if you suspect injury or illness.
