The Alaskan Host Bed and Breakfast hosted an event for our mission team while we were in Alaska. (See photos here.)Owners Jim and Kathy Huston knew that our team would have limited opportunity to purchase authentic Alaska artisan crafts to bring home as souvenirs. They also have the confidence of having the top bed and breakfast in the Willow, Alaska area.
Finding the Alaskan Host Bed and Breakfast is easy. Turn onto Old Parks Hwy. off of Parks Hwy. Proceed to mile 66.5. You will see the marked turn off for their driveway. Willow is approximately halfway between Anchorage and Denali National Park and is the perfect place to stop.
The Alaskan Host Bed and Breakfast sits serenely on a beautiful 200 acres of Alaska terrain. Visitors can enjoy the private lake and hiking trails. Guests can occasionally spot moose or other wildlife.
On the evening of our visit Jim and Kathy Huston did everything possible to make our group feel right at home. Although this was not an overnight stay it is easy to see how much the couple would do to make overnight guests feel like celebrities.
Walking into the Alaskan Host Bed and Breakfast is like walking into a small museum. The downstairs living area is filled with interesting game mounts. It seems like everything you might find in Alaska is represented in this large room. An inviting pool table and comfortable seating makes this room the perfect place to relax.
On this evening, craft vendors such as BBC Quilts and other had spread there wares on the table. Realtor Gail Just brought some jewelry that was made by friends. There was also art, more jewelry, quilts, carvings and more. I enjoy visiting artisan shows and can say that all items were among the finest that I have seen anywhere. Making selections was tough!
In the kitchen and dining area of Alaskan Host Bed and Breakfast Kathy served a culinary feast of Alaska dishes. We enjoyed caribou sausage, Alaskan salmon cooked in two different kinds of brine, pretzels and more. Our team enjoyed trying the foods. The moose meatballs received the most comments.
It is possible that no one has a deeper knowledge of the Willow area and parks than does Jim Huston. Jim regaled the men with stories of hunting and fishing excursions. Not only is he a delight to meet but he works for the park service. It doesn't matter if you are looking for the best fishing hole or the best sightseeing adventure Jim will know where you can go.
While the men where talking Kathy took the ladies on a tour of the house. We enjoyed seeing the care and attention to detail that the couple puts into the Alaskan Host Bed and Breakfast.
Each room has a different theme. The Alaska Room is decorated in pure Alaskan style. A large antler mount dominates the room. Snowshoes grace the wall. The bathroom is painted and decorated to resemble an outhouse.
Another room is the whale room. Comfortable and cozy this room is uniquely decorated. A 12' piece of native scrimshawed baleen decorates the wall. The windows provide a superb view of the Talkeetna Mountains.
The Alaskan Host Bed and Breakfast was one of the highlights of my Mother-Daughter Trip of a Lifetime. If you get to Willow, Alaska be sure to stop in and stay with Jim and Kathy Huston. You will be immediately taken in by their hospitality and warmth.
