The history of the G did not start with Infiniti, for those of you who do not know. Its origins come all the way back from the Skyline (let's forget about the G20 for a second here), Nissan's go-fast performance machine with its 1st Generation model produced in 1955. The G35 is the 11th Generation, and the G37 is the new face for the performance and ultimately luxry thriving series.
The well recognized BNR34 Series of the Skyline are still one of the most drooled-over cars of the tuner world today, especially the sleek and stylish even to this day Skyline GT-R, produced from 1998 and ending its production in the year 2002. In 2003 the Infiniti G35 was released, featuring a VQ35DE engine producing 260 horsepower with automatic transmission, and 280 with the manual, which was in a front-midship engine, rear wheel drive (FR) layout. An all-wheel-drive model of the G35 was also avaliable, featuring Nissan's ATTESA E-TS AWD System.
Between the years of 2003-2006, Infiniti did not make any changes to the exterior, but improved other aspects of the car, performance related and interior related as well. Going from a 260/280 (AT/MT) horsepower engine, in 2006, Infiniti improved the G35's engine slightly to produce roughly 275/298 (AT/MT) horsepower (2007 model).
All that brings us to where the G is at today.
The New and Improved
The 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe features a smackin' 330 horsepower 3.7L VQ37VHR (High Rev) with VVEL (Variable Value Event and Lift) V6 Engine, and a sportier, more luxurious, sleeker exterior and interior design. Of course options are avaliable, including Paddle Shifters, a Bose 11 Speaker System with a 24-bit Interface System and 9.3 GB Music Box hard drive, and much more.
Performance
With the 3.7L VQ37VHR with WEL estimated to be able to achieve 330 horsepower with 270 lb-ft of torque, about 35% of the engine parts are new unique parts from the 2007 G35 Sedan VQ37HR.
Along with the engine, the G37 Coupe includes the application of the new VVEL (Variable Value Event and Lift) System technology. The VVEL System uses a combination of hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake to ehance the performance and response of the engine. Also, the VVEL System improves emissions and fuel efficiency, and the System works together with the CVTCS (Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System), allowing a 75,000 rpm redline.
Improvements in terms of stiffening the chasis have also been made to improve performance for the new model, including a lower overall height and wider front and rear track width.
Suspension features a four wheel independent design with lightweight aluminum components, large front and rear stabilising bars, higher spring rates, and optimised suspension damping.
Braking consists of a standard four wheel vented, four channel, four sensor Anti-lock Braking System, ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distibution (EBD), and Brake Assist (BA).
Of course, a sexy and stylish 19 inch cast aluminum wheels, and high performance set is available, if you aren't satisfied with the standard all new 18 inch package.
Exterior
The smooth curves add to the elegancy of the G37, but the curves also give off an aggressive yet "too hot to be touched" feel and personality.
On the exterior, additions to the 2008 G37 start with smooth front fender curves, a wave style hood, Infiniti's signature grille (double-arch) and finish off with the L-shaped High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlights with fog lamps.
Interior
The more significant features that are new include a new instrument panel design showing off an Infiniti white and violet illumination glow and high tech multi-function information drive computer which display: real-time fuel economy, average speed, elapsed time, distance travelled, distance until fuel tank is empty, outside air temperature, warning indicators, odometer, and automatic transmission shift indicator.
Adding to the already "oh my gosh, it's so nice" interior is an available Bose 11 Speaker System. Not to foget, there's the Bluetooth hands-free phone system, and a new touch-screen Navigation System, and 9.3 gigabyte Music Box hard drive.
The interior color can be chosen from Wheat, Graphite, and Stone.
Saftey for G37 can only get better than that of the G35, with the Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) and Advanced Air Bag System (AABS), only to list a few.
So I'm sure it's clear to you now whether or not the Infiniti G37 has proven itself as the younger, sexier brother of the G35, and it's obvious the replacement is well worth the few extra grand you'll be spending on this beauty of a car.
