The Allure of the Bad Boy

What is it About Bad Boys Anyway?

Fran Brockmyre

A new twist has arisen in the Casey Anthony murder trial. Casey is a Florida mother who is accused of murdering her 2 year old daughter. Jury selection is taking place now. It has not been an easy process finding people who have not heard of Ms. Anthony's case and are willing and able to spend two months away from their families to serve on the jury.

Another character has emerged to take some of the limelight away from the suspect. Rosalie Bolin has joined the defense team. Who is Rosalie Bolin, you may well ask. According to an article by Rob Shaw in the Tampa Tribune, "She is married to Oscar Ray Bolin, a convicted killer now on death row..." Shaw goes on to say that Rosalie met Oscar Ray when she was an attorney on his defense team. She left her husband and four daughters for Bolin.

I can just imagine the conversation that took place when Rosalie informed her family of her new love:

Rosalie: "Uh, honey, girls, there's something I have to tell you."

Husband: "What is it?"

Daughters: "Go ahead, Mom."

Rosalie: "Well, as you may have noticed, I haven't been very happy for quite some time."

All: "Yeah, we have noticed. You've seemed a little distracted. Are you okay?"

R. "Ya know that case I've been working on? I haven't been able to talk about it but it's over. So now I can tell you. I've met someone."

(Long pregnant pause)

Hubby: "Girls, maybe you should leave the room."

R. "No, they need to hear this too. When I was a teenager I was always attracted to bad boys. There's just something about the danger that surrounds them that I found irresistible. Then I met your father, a good boy, responsible, hard working, law abiding, loving and caring. Against my better judgment, I married him."

Daughters: (sarcastically), "Oh yeah, Mom, definitely a bad decision."

Hubby: "Girls, let her continue. I can't wait to see where this is going."

R. (tears streaming down her face), "Working on this case, I met the bad boy of my dreams. His name is Oscar Ray and he has been convicted of three slayings. He's been sentenced to death row. How much badder could you get than that? I'm going to marry him. See, girls, it is possible to realize your dreams."

On a serious note, although this happened in 1997 and the family has probably moved on, I realize that this recent publicity could renew the pain this family originally experienced. How bad could the marriage have been that Rosalie left for a convicted murderer? Or maybe she just doesn't like sex. (Do prisoners on death row get conjugal visits?)

The Bolin case is more than bizarre. I used to keep the child of a Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy at my day care center who guarded Bolin when he was in the hospital - he was constantly hitting on her. Rosalie was actually not a lawyer, but a paralegal, when she met Bolin. She became a lawyer after a judge had her removed from the courtroom during Bolin's trial. If Bolin were to ever get out (which I cannot see happening unless he escapes), the man will have nothing to do with this woman - of this I am convinced. He uses her just like he has used every other person in his life. I cannot believe anyone would ever hire her.

I thought that there was some code of ethics that lawyers had to adhere to .. I guess I was wrong. Excellent piece but I have to admit, I knew nothing about this until your article.
