The Alphabet According to JerseyNana: "L"

Weekly Alphabet Article

Youngsters: Hope you had a wonderful week. The world is experiencing crazy weather right now and I hope you enjoyed the weather you had this past week. Kids, your first word this week is LEARN. One of the things that I remember a teacher told us when I was a youngster that we should LEARN something new every day. I love to LEARN a new thing each day and my fellow readers sure supply me with great stuff each and every day, so there is no chance of me not LEARNING at least one thing each day. Remember youngsters, if you do this every day when you are a senior citizen like Nana, you will be smart enough to go on Jeopardy!

Your second word is LEAP FROG. Ok, I know its two words, but LEAP by itself does not make as much sense with this explanation so bear with me. I have seen these games called LEAP FROG and they are really great fun and as a bonus, you LEARN something from them too. From toddlers to probably ten year olds and older, this is a fun way to get smarter. When Nana was a child we also played a game called LEAP FROG where we stooped down like a FROG and would LEAP over each other. Back when Nana was a child there was no such thing as a computer or video game, so we ran and jumped and LEAPED and made our own fun.

In-Betweeners: Your first word is LAUGH. I LOVE to LAUGH. It is one of my most enjoyable things to do. Luckily, my family LOVES to LAUGH too. Actually when the whole gang of us is together; pretty much all we do is LAUGH. I am certain the only wrinkles we get in our old age are from frowning and the LAUGH lines don't count as wrinkles. A particularly enjoyable article one of my friends; Michele Starkey wrote on AC is "Let's Give Them Something to Smile About" here it's another reason to LAUGH because life is way too short!

If you did not already figure out the second word; it is LOVE. This is the month devoted to LOVE and not only for LOVERS. Have you looked over the Valentine candy in the chain drug stores and supermarkets? It's a plethora of sugar and fat calories. But if calories do not matter, have a ball, but remember that there are other ways to show your LOVE to your LOVED ones without the calories. From gifts available at the dollar store to high end gifts stores like Neiman Marcus and Sharper Image and Tiffany and everything in between; there are many great things that will suit your Valentine without adding to your dentist bill or waistline.

Seniors: Hi my fellow seniors! Your first word today is LETTER. When was the last time you received a LETTER in the mail that you actually liked to receive? Maybe it came from an old friend or a thank you from a grandchild for a birthday gift; not those annoying bills or solicitations. Well do you remember how good it felt to receive it? If you do, it's your turn to return the favor and sit and write a LETTER to someone who would feel the same way about receiving your letter. Emails have become so impersonal and frankly, I hardly read emails; especially ones forwarded over and over again. So go back to basics and sit and write someone a LETTER today.

Your second word is LINCOLN. The president and not the automobile is what I am talking about. When we were kids, LINCOLN was a celebrated holiday and we had a day off from school. Nowadays he is lumped in with Washington and celebrated on the third Monday of February. Where I used to live, we had a large statue in the center of Lincoln Park that was very similar to the one in Washington, DC. I hope as the years go by and our grandchildren are grown, LINCOLN continues to be a major part of history and not just pushed in the corner to be forgotten. So if anyone wants to know or still cares about the foundations of our country; I still celebrate Lincoln's Birthday on February 12th.
