The Alpine MRP-M500

Unbiased Review on Alpines Popular 500 Watt Mono Car Amplifier

John Ehle
One of the good qualities of this Amplifier is the Class D power architecture that the Alpine MRP-M500 Employs. Much more efficient design than conventional class A amplifiers with a much smaller form factor. Harmonic distortion is at a minimum as well.

Some of the key features include

500 Watt x1 at 2 ohms
300 Watt x1 at 4 ohms
variable low pass filter adjustable from 50-200Hz at 24db/octave
class D power
gold plated terminals

Upon installing the amplifier and connecting the proper terminals I noticed how clean and tight the connectors from my 4 gauge wiring kit fit into the Alpine MRP-M500. The foot print of the amp itself is very small and the look of the black aluminum exterior with cool blue power indicator goes well with interior of my trunk.

The test subs for this review are a pair of Alpine's SWE-1243 twelve inch 4 ohm single voice coil sub-woofers. Each with A continuous power range of 250 Watts RMS, I felt these would be a perfect match for the Amp. Being used to only exclusively buying JL Audio, Rockford fosgate, Xtant and in my earlier age getting MTX products.

Alpine has always made quality audio products however, I was skeptical about going against the grain of what was tried and trued to me. I decided to try out an all Alpine sound system on my 1993 Jaguar XJ6. I wanted sound system that was crisp, clear and refined.

I turned on my Alpine CDE-102 mp3/cd player and adjusted the best settings for the Highs and Mid basses. Then Adjusted the amplifier cross over and gain. I could not Believe how little these 12" Subs hit! Very accurate and seamlessly blended with the other Alpine speakers.

This undoubtedly was the best sounding car audio system I had ever installed. Although my only gripe was the subsonic filter not being able to be shut off completely. One of the aspects of the Sub-woofers that I am used too is the fact they sound awesome operating at very low sound frequencies. I love the boomy sound systems that can rattle your nose hairs and shake loose your rear view mirror! Well...........maybe not so much anymore, I am older now and have come to appreciate quality above else. A good sounding system, is the type of system that will make you want to start "Car Dancing" as my wife would call it!
