COMMENTARY | This week's episode of "The Amazing Race" featured scenes from Indonesia.
Teams began in Yogyakarta where they rode in formation on bicycles to Fort Vredburg. Following the model of the Dutch colonizers of the 1940s, contestants wore the trademark khaki uniforms.
Teams made their way to the village of Salakmalang where they were given a choice between two detours: Rice Field or Grass Fed. In Rice Field, teams had to deliver lunch to farmers and planted 300 seedlings. In Grass Fed, teams had to fill two enormous bags with grass, deliver two sheep to a nearby shed, and fill a trough with six buckets of water.
They then made their way to Borobudur Temple where they had to count the Buddha statues and demonstrate the different hand positions. This is where the social aspect of the game came in handy. Adventurers Laurence and Zac teamed up with Andy and Tommy while the other teams banded together, excluding Mom and Pop (Bill and Cathi).
Although I always enjoy "The Amazing Race," I'm less enthusiastic about this season because there are so many annoying personalities. Cindy's Type-A perfectionism is irritating and overbearing. Perhaps Ernie should have broken his other bike pedal in order to foster their elimination. That way he would have an easy opening to get out of that relationship.
Marcus comes across as rough and hot-headed. The shrill twins remind me of mutated Barbies. And the squabbling siblings make me feel grateful to be an only child.
As of now, I'm rooting for Mom and Pop, the Adventurers, and the Snowboarders. They seem to have the most positive attitude and are respectful to their competitors. Jeremy and Sandy have received so little screen time that I have yet to form an opinion about them.
Unlike Amani and Marcus, the Showgirls made a crucial mistake in not paying their taxi driver to stick around while they were at the temple. As a result, it took them too long to catch a ride to the final pit stop.
I was a bit sad to see Kaylani and Lisa go -- that is, until she played the "single mom" card. That was worn out enough with Keisha and Jen. Now I'm glad to see the Showgirls go. Hopefully the siblings and the twins will follow soon.
