The Amazing Spider-Man Trailer Becomes Latest Superheroic Leak

Robert Dougherty

The Amazing Spider-Man trailer leak is old hat by now to superhero fans. After all, they spent the past week trying to bootleg the first Dark Knight Rises trailer and just found the first Avengers teaser at the start of this week. Now, once again, a first look at a superhero epic that won't be out for another 12 months has leaked online, although the new Spider Man and his allegedly amazing reboot will also be seen shortly at Comic-Con.

While fans eventually saw The Dark Knight Rises clip before the last Harry Potter, and will see the Avengers debut after Captain America, the first Amazing Spider-Man teaser will likely have its official release at Comic-Con Friday. It and perhaps other new footage will be on display during a panel that features stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone and director Marc Webb.

Those who saw the clip before it was pulled will probably ask why the tone is darker than past movies. It seems the loss of Peter Parker's parents, not just the future loss of Uncle Ben, will be a major point, while there were plenty of shots of a brooding Peter. However, there is one promising P.O.V. sequence of the new Spider-Man in action at the end.

That is the only bit of superheroics, especially since the movie won't be out until next Fourth of July. This was also the same problem for the first look at The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, although Avengers seemed to have more action in its sneak peek. Yet Spider-Man was the only film to have a full-length teaser at the standard 2 1/2 minutes, but that may be because it is designed for Comic-Con.

For those who got an earlier look online, it was easy to see the trailer is trying to be more serious than Sam Raimi's efforts. Josh Tyler of Cinemablend reasoned "they're trying to turn Spider-Man into Batman," or at least Christopher Nolan's Batman; Tyler even made a Twilight comparison as well.

This kind of reinvention may seem unnecessary, as the entire idea of a reboot might be. After all, the only reasons for it are that most fans hated Spider-Man 3 and a deal couldn't be made in time to make Spider-Man 4. The original franchise was hailed as a classic until the very end, so can it be topped -- and does it need to be?

Although the first preview shows how different Webb will be in trying to top it, it will still be a year until The Amazing Spider-Man is judged to be truly amazing or not. But Comic-Con fans will get a better idea from Garfield, Stone and Webb Friday in San Diego.
