'Citizen Kane' maintained its number one spot, while 'The Godfather' and 'Casablanca' swapped places on the list as numbers 2 and 3, respectively. 'Raging Bull' took a surprising number 4 spot, a jump from its previous place at 24. Other top ten films included 'Singin' in the Rain' at fifth place, followed by 'Gone With the Wind,' 'Lawrence of Arabia,' 'Schindler's List,' 'Vertigo' and 'The Wizard of Oz.' Most surprising among these is perhaps 'Vertigo' making the jump from its previous spot at number 61 all the way to number 9.
The criteria for the top films has a lot to do with the importance of the film not only when it was released, but also the relevancy it still holds. Films that reflect who we are and at times determine who we are often make the list. New films making the cut this year include 'Toy Story,' 'The Shawshank Redemption,' 'The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,' 'Saving Private Ryan,' 'Titanic,' 'The Sixth Sense' and 'Blade Runner.'
Among films removed from the list were the iconic 'The Birth of a Nation,' 'Amadeus,' 'Doctor Zhivago,' 'From Here to Eternity,' 'The Jazz Singer,' 'My Fair Lady,' and 'The Third Man.' Many films staying on the list dropped several spots including 'The African Queen,' 'A Clockwork Orange,' and 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.' Others rose in ranking such as Clint Eastwood's 'Unforgiven, 'Rocky' and 'The Searchers.'
