The Amityville Horror House in Long Island, New York

Is it Really Haunted?

SE
The 'Amityville Horror House' has become quite famous, spawning several movies and books. You may think you know what really happened in this house, but how much of what is in the movies or books was fictionalized? This is what really happened in Amityville.

First thing first - yes, a murder did take place at 112 Ocean Avenue. On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo did kill all of his family as they slept. The 24-year-old used a high powered rifle to shoot his parents and four siblings. DeFeo said he committed the murders because he heard voices and presumed that God was talking to him.

Just over a year later, the Lutz family did move into the Amityville Horror House. They left 28 days later, claiming that the house was haunted. The Lutzes said they experienced a great deal of paranormal activity: doors were ripped off of hinges, windows flew open, a swarm of flies materialized out of nowhere, and a crucifix hung on a wall revolved until it was hanging upside down. Mrs. Lutz says she levitated several times.

Both the Lutz family and their priest stated that each time the priest tried to help the family, he ended up with bleeding blisters on his hands. They also said their phone calls were often interrupted by strange sounds.

Discrepancies in the Lutzes story have led many to believe that the story of the Amityville haunting is a hoax. For example, the Lutz family has said they found a demonic footprint in the snow. Weather records show there was not any snow at the time they say they saw the footprint. Despite accounts of doors slamming, the home's original doorknobs, locks and hinges appeared untouched. Also, the original film and book showed police going to the home during the Lutzes 28 day stay. There isn't a record that the family called the police during this time.

Skeptics of the Amityville haunting also point out George Lutz's claim that a pig with glowing red eyes befriended his daughter Missy. The idea of a pig haunting a house sounds absurd to some, and in one interview George Lutz stated that he actually couldn't tell what the figure with glowing red eyes was.

The house is currently occupied by a family that has not had any paranormal experiences in the home. The appearance of the home, and the house number, has been changed. Although the house still attracts tourists, life in the house and neighborhood is routine.

Personally, If i had another family move into my house and i was shot with a high powered rifle in the head while i slept, i don't think i would want another family to move into my house, enjoying themselves while my family was disfunctional. I guess trauma in life also exist in death as well to.

I grew up in Amityville my whole life. Everything that was written in the books and in the movies are all a hoax. The only thing that is true aboutn the house is the murders. The current owners of the house are very nice. I grew up with the previous owners children and the rest of their family. They are good friends of mine. Yes it does get annoying by all the traffic and people always stopping and asking where the house is just so they can see it. The house that was in the movie is not the house in Amityville, that house is located in New Jersey. if there are anyquestions feel free to ask me. Black.angel318@yahoo.com

I live on Long island and have seen the house many times. It looks a lot different. The owners can't stand the traffic in front of their house constantly.

I would really like to see this house. I really just think that it is a hoax that the Lutzes think that the house is haunted because if u really think about it they could of just made the house an attraction house with none of the actual events happening. The new owners of the house haven't had any problems so i sure as heck don't beleive that it is haunted i think that they just wanted to say things. As for Ronnie Defeo i think he just was going crazy from drugs or something and that's why he ended up doing what he did.
