The Use of Animals in Research

Steven Tyler
The use of animals in research is a necessity in order for humans to continue finding cures and treatments to relieve suffering for common diseases among both humans and animals. Though animal research may seem like a cruel thing, some reality has to be put into the matter. Most of the things that people eat would also fit under the same category as being cruel to animals. It is a way that human's survive and continue to grow both healthier and intellectually. Without research using animals, humans would be facing many life threatening diseases that we now have antibiotics, vaccines, and other treatments for. Animal research has also helped scientists understand cancer greatly, and has helped aide in creating some medicines that can not cure but will cause less pain and suffering for humans who face untreatable medical conditions. But animal research does not just help humans. Animal research also helps animals. Researchers have found many cures for common animal diseases that would otherwise be life- threatening if research from animals had not been an option.

I can not seem to understand why people are against animal research so very much. Though, there are certainly cases of animal abuse during research, and this would upset anyone, the good definitely outweigh the bad. People against research using animals want to limit and stop the animals from being used, but do you think these individuals are asking if animals were used in the research for their treatments that many are currently taking by pill or will need in the future at a hospital? The answer is probably no. Most fail to recognize that without animal research, there would be very few treatments available relative to the amount of different treatments humans rely on today. Without animal research, researchers would not have any where to gain information to save lives. Humans most certainly will not give consent to researchers for them to be tested. Though humans feel sympathy for animals who can not give consent to be tested, they have to realize that if human's do not want to be tested and they want treatments, there is no other option but the use of animals.

I feel that the use of animals in research should stop being limited due to the number of people who are against it because they fail to realize its importance. If researchers did not have a limit on animals to a minimum of what is expected to reasonably conclude a study, I think we as humans would benefit more. Researchers are, in terms, getting limited on how much they can help both humans and animals with the limit on the number of animals they can use per study. With no limit of animals to use in research, the number of countless diseases left untreated would diminish as researchers find cures. This would pave the way to a healthier life for ourselves as well as generations to follow. Animal research has already extended our lives from diseases that killed generations before us. Let there be no limit in animal research and then human and animal's short lives will be extended even longer free of current diseases and cancers. What a reassuring idea!
