The Animals' Thanksgiving - A Thanksgiving Poem

The Animal's Thanksgiving

We don't understand the history

We don't understand the day

We don't understand why you sit and talk that way

We understand the smells

They waft through the house

They blow on the breeze

We beg for a morsel a bite if you please

We line up by the kitchen

From biggest to small

There are so many we fill up the hall

There are parrots and dogs

horses and a pigeon

Just a nibble only a smidgen

Then the table is set

And the people sit down

Packed so tightly it's like a small town

Then it's over, some of them resting

Some of them cleaning

We begin to see the meaning

We don't understand the history

We don't understand the day

We understand our bowls filled in a delicious way

There's turkey and gravy, just enough for us dogs

The horses have carrots, the pigeon loves the corn

The parrots eat cranberries left from the morn

The fox finds the bones later that night

There's pumpkin for rabbits and deer

And burnt apple pie behind the deck in the rear

We're warm and we're loved and we're home

The wealth was spread, there's nothing to waste

We saw, we smelled we had a big taste

We don't understand the history,

But, we are thankful for this day.

At our house, it takes longer to feed the animals than to feed us. It's particularly tricky with the parrots as they understand quantity where as dogs don't . To a dog any amount is enough, but to a parrot, too small of a bite will get you a grumble.
