About 35 years ago, Walla Walla city fathers organized the first Walla Walla Balloon Stampede. Local balloonists Bill Lloyd and Nat Vale launched the event with a few pilots. The event is held in May, generally around Mother's Day. Balloonists from all over the country attend the hot air balloon here in southeast Washington State. The area has mild weather, which is essential for lift-off. If the wind is blowing more than 10 miles per hour, the balloons do not go up. To maximize the potential for successful lift-off, the event is scheduled early in the morning and sunset when winds are calmest. The balloons generally launch from the Walla Walla County Fairgrounds, but they have also used other local parks. A special non-denominational service is held prior to lift-off, no doubt to pray for favorable conditions.

The balloons come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. A crowd favorite is the Planters(R) Peanut Man balloon. There has also been a Tony the Tiger(R) balloon and a Moby Dick balloon. They make a colorful show when they are all able to launch. Some will accept daring passengers, but once again, weather will limit their ability to take riders. The balloons generally launch Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings. Then after sundown, be prepared for the "nightglow" when the pilots fire up their burners. The light from the burners fills the balloons. If you think they are colorful during the day, you'll be amazed at how they look in firelight. Bring your high-speed film cameras as you will want to take pictures.

In between launchings, visitors have other activities to keep them busy. A mini fair is held, without the carnival rides. Arts and crafts vendors from around the Northwest offer their wares for sale. Local restaurants sell their specialties, especially anything containing the local favorite Walla Walla Sweet Onions. Organizers set up a stage on the fairgrounds for local entertainment such as singers and cultural dances. There is a kids area with face-painting, balloons, clowns, and other activities. Commemorative t-shirts, buttons, and other items are always on hand.

Other events are held as part of the celebration, though some are away from the fairgrounds location. Nearby Whitman College holds concerts. Some of the local wineries open their doors for special wine-tasting events. Local golf courses hold tournaments. Enthusiasts show off their classic cars and motorcycles. Back at the fairgrounds, bettors can gamble on their favorite horses.

The event is fun for the whole family, but probably geared more toward the younger kids. Locals and visitors love the chance to enjoy the nice weather at this time of year. Trying some world famous Walla Walla Sweet Onions with some of your favorite fair food is a special treat.
