The App Store: Apple's Biggest Selling Point

Erika Gilliam-Long
Everyone knows that an iPhone's biggest selling point is the app store. What is this you ask? It is a store that has all sorts of applications for sale. Some of these applications are varied in price from $0.99 all the way up to $59.99. But why is it that the app store is all the hype among the iPhone? What makes it so awesome?

The Apple app store will give you access to over 2 million applications that can be download to your phone. These can range from games, utility apps, social networking apps, entertainment apps, music apps, reference apps, and sports apps. There are 20 categories in the app store that help divide things down for someone who is searching for an application.

The iPhone's selling point of the app store is because it allows everyone to have a phone that can be changed every day if wanted. It gives people the ability to control what applications are on the phone based on what they need or what they like. For me, most of my applications are games or applications that allow me to expand things that I might want to know. I enjoy testing out games and letting people know if they are any good or not.

I also love applications like Shazam. It is an application that allows you to identify a song that you might not know. You simply open the application on the phone, allow it to hear the music, then it will tell you the artist and name of the song. In addition to that, it will give you the option to locate the music you just identified on youtube, amazon, or put on twitter or facebook. Another really great application I have is Orbitz. This application acts as a phone book, a map, and a nearby city information look up. It pulls all the contacts from my phone into it, provides me with mapping of anything I search inside the application, and also recommendations for things near me.

Many people enjoy the photo editing software that can be downloaded from the app store. Others enjoy things like iTranslate, Holy Bible, or even allrecipes.com applications. I enjoy having all three of these applications on my phone. If I am at the store and cannot remember what all I need to purchase for a meal, I simply open my allrecipes.com application and have a full website of recipes in a simple and easy to use format.

Two other very useful applications that I have are the TV Guide and also Phone Flicks. I love having the TV Guide application because in my house I can never find the one I need so now I only have to open the application on my phone. The application gives you the option to program it to your location and provider, and for me this application has never been wrong on what was on. Phone Flicks is not connected to Netflix in any form, but allows you to control the movies on your Netflix account through the application. I love this application because if I am out with friends and we began discussing a movie that I want to see, then there is no longer a need to remember the name. Simply open my Phone Flicks application and add it to there now.

As you can see the ease of use and also the variety of things that can be downloaded would make this a simple and enjoyable feature of the iPhone. It truly does make the phone a phone that everyone can enjoy. It is simple for people on the go and for many simplifies your life.
