The Appalling State of the Commonwealth Games Accommodation in Pictures
Commonwealth Games Accommodation Makes Motel 6 Look like the Hilton
This was followed with the collapse of part of a false ceiling in the arena where the wrestling is due to be help, but by far the biggest controversy over the Commonwealth Games in new Delhi is over the state of the accommodation that is being built for the athletes.
Pictures released today by the BBC of the Athletes Village (see here) show just how bad the state of the accommodation is, and it's almost beyond belief.
The bathroom sinks and showers are filthy, with bowls stained brown. Toilets are leaking over the floor, there is flooding from air conditioning units, incomplete structures everywhere, and worst of all, muddy footprints from stray dogs on mattresses that competitors are supposed to be sleeping on.
For anyone who has ever stayed in a Motel 6 in the USA, which is one of the low end hotel chains, I think you will agree that the pictures of the Athletes Village make a Motel 6 look like the Hilton in comparison.
With the Commonwealth Games due to begin on 3rd October, which is only weeks away, apparently 1,000 extra people have been sent in to try and complete the building work in the village and to clean things up ready for the athletes, who are due to arrive any day now.
A number of countries have already delayed the departure of their teams, including Canada, New Zealand and Scotland.
In addition to possibility that the athlete's village may not be ready in time for the games, there are mounting security concerns following the shooting of two tourists near one of the tourist attractions over the weekend.
India has had seven years to prepare for the Commonwealth Games, and yet building work only began in 2008. Costs have gone through the roof, making it already the most expensive Commonwealth Games on record, and to make things worse, ticket sales have been extremely poor.
With the possibility that the games may now be cancelled, and with a number of key athletes already having pulled out of the tournament, it is likely that the number of spectators who are prepared to travel to the games will also be low.

Post a CommentI haven't had a chance to see the news yet, but I hope to see plenty of evidence that everything is well in the athletes village and that the games will be a success.
Sir, if BBC is going to post pics of a construction which was still going on, it casts doubt on BBC rather than India. Just go and check with athletes of ur own countries now that the CWG Village is ready. The facilities r world-class.
Great report.
Thanks for the report on this
I too haven't heard much about this before. I agree with Sandy. I feel bad for the athletes.
