They can't stop us from growing up, and many children today will leave them behind. Some choose to move away and never see their parents again. Some children go to a further college location to get away. It's always intriguing when i hear disrespect towards someones own parent. I hear it everyday, "I hate my mom, she's such a bitch!" or "My dad thinks he knows everything he's so dumb". Not only do we hear this often, a majority of us have said it!
I think maturing is to know your priorities and to realize how important your family is. Growing up, my friends were all that mattered. Even until two years ago, my girlfriend was the most important thing in my life. I'm not sure why i had the sudden realization that family came first, It may have started to develop when I first moved from close friends. Perhaps it was graduating from high school or losing the first love of my life. There were so many times that people were taken away that i thought would always be in my life. This continuing disappointment may be the sole reason for my maturity and newly found appreciation for my family. They were always there at the end of the day, through all hardships i endured.
As a college student, i no longer come home and lock myself in my room. The few minutes i get with my parents together are the highlight of my day. Recently my dad has been ill and going to the hospital frequently, without health insurance it's been a large burden financially. My sister has also gotten engaged. I have kept few friends, and have grown attached to my family. I have never worked so hard at school or at work, however there has never been a happier time in my life. It truly doesn't matter how poor a man may be; with family by his side, he's rich.
