A Succulent Introduction

Apricots are those gorgeous orange colored fruits that look a lot like the peach's first cousin. The apricot, originating in China, made its way to Europe by way of Armenia where it received its scientific classification Prunus Armenaica. This fruit is very nutritious. It will refresh you on a hot summer day and awaken your taste buds when you enjoy it in a variety of ways.

Hungry for More Information?

The Apricot, which in North America, is in season from the month of May through the month of August. If this article turns you onto the apricot in the dead of winter, do not fear. Finding this fruit year round is far from difficult. At your local grocery store, you are likely to find a canned or dried version of apricots available no matter what the month. At the grocery store, when choosing this fruit, go for apricots that are "slightly soft" and have a "rich orange color". I highly advise, eating this fruit fresh should you have the opportunity because it tastes oh so refreshing and smooth. Especially when blended into smoothies, chopped and added to a healthy parfait, or sliced and added to a cold salad.

One great tasting, fruity cooler calls for blending fresh or frozen strawberries, fresh or canned apricots, and fresh banana. If you'd like a creamier dessert, add some low fat yogurt. This smoothie is super delicious and satisfying-a real crowd pleaser!

If adding apricots to a cold salad, you might like to try using chopped romaine or spinach. These greens are a lot more flavorful than iceberg lettuce, though iceberg lettuce would work just as well. Thinly slice your ripe apricot and consider adding some chopped walnuts, peanuts, or almonds for extra flavor and nutrients. Finally, add dressing. Using salsa to top this salad would be a fantastic, lower calorie option that will have your taste buds singing. Raspberry vinaigrette or any other dressing that you prefer could do the trick as well.

Apricots Love Your Heart and Eyes

Apricots are chock full of heart loving beta-carotene and eye loving vitamin A making this fresh fruit a healthy addition to just about any diet. In addition, the apricot offers a healthy supply of fiber, which is integral to a healthy heart and digestive track. With more fiber in your diet, you can avoid uncomfortable bloating and fatigue due to constipation or diverticulitis.
