The Ariston Cafe Route 66 Litchfield Illinois: "The Best Food I Have Ever Eaten"

Terra Husser Farrell
The USA and its quintessential Route 66 is a place that some may find great history and pleasure at the same time. I was recently in Illinois for a week and ended up in Litchfield. There isn't much in this town at all except for a lot of corn fields, some fast food chains, a drive in, and historic Route 66. Being the adventurous foodie that I am I look for the places off the beaten path to eat and places that come highly recommended from the locals.

I was driving along the short stretch of route 66 and found the Ariston Cafe the look on the outside is what drew me in something just told me you have to stop here and try the food. My son was with me, he is the perfect companion for these kind of things and he at three said that it looked like a good place to go. When we walked in we fealt like we were at home there and all though I am southern by relocation and have adopted the southern accent the people there were as kind as could be.

We sat at a booth in the back and the table I remember fondly had a white linen table cloth on it and had napkins folded so fancy. The waitress took our drink order and offered us some of the best selections on the menu. I chose the corned beef sandwich with a sweet tea to drink and my son chose the chicken with mashed potatoes and applesauce.

When our food arrived to our table you could just tell that it was home made and love and care went into every bit of it. I bit into my sandwich and clearly this was the best food I have ever tasted it automatically gave me comfort and that is alot of what I seek with a meal. My sons food quickly disappeared from his plate and he seemed utterly satisfied as any parents knows getting your child to sit down and eat a whole meal can sometimes be a challenge. I asked him if he thought that his food was good and he said that is was greeeeaaaaat!!!!!!

The waitress came to the table with a desert tray and there was a time I can remember that restaurant's took so much pride in there food to do something like this. The place was packed, and she still managed to place one of every single desert on a tray and bring it to me I just couldn't believe it. I chose the baklava and my son got a small piece of cherry cheese cake we were on vacation we splurged a bit. When I bit into the baklava it was like a flashback from my childhood it was almost as good as my families recipe I would have to say that it stands right up there beside it.

My son's cheese cake was simply the best, it was homemade, also and you could taste the real butter in the crust the creaminess of the natural ingredients and the homemade cherry sauce on top. Our bill ended up being about 24.00 for lunch but believe me for food like that I would have paid 124.00 !!! If you are ever passing through Litchfield IL. please don't hesitate to stop in and have one of the best experiences in your life!!! This cafe is one I will remember for the rest of my life and if I am ever passing through again it will be the first stop that I make.
