The Art of the Movie Poster

L. Vincent Poupard
When someone brings up about art in Hollywood, most of us will think about acting, directing, editing, or special effects. What many of us forget about is that there is an art to making a good movie poster.

Many years ago, marketers realized that a good movie poster can bring people into the theaters. They realized that they should spend hours developing the ideas that would go into the movie poster. Some of the older movie posters have become very rare and collectable items.

There are many books that are dedicated to the history of movie posters, and to the art form that they represent. There are even conventions that are held every year where collectors can buy, sell, and trade classic movie posters.

There have even been some movie posters that have gone at auctions for thousands of dollars. There are many collectors that woud do anything they could to get their hands on an original Wizard of Oz, Dracula, or Gone With the Wind movie poster.

Even though most publicity for a movie is done through other mediums today, there is still a need for an artistic movie poster. Most people do not realize that they see movie posters everyday.

If you walk into almost any movie theater in the United States, you will see movie posters everywhere. These movie posters will be for movies that are currently out, coming out soon, or are a long way from coming out.

There have even been times where movie posters were put out just to see what the reaction was. When the Scooby Doo movies were in concept form, the production company put out a poster for the movie just to hear the reaction. Obviously they like what they heard since they made the movies.

There are also times where movie posters will be made into billboards or placards that will be seen on the sides of buses or bus stops. There have even been times when movie posters have been blown up and placed on the sides of buildings during special events.

Good movie posters are now made into the covers of DVDs. This follows the tradition of taking the most popular movie poster and making it into the cover for a video. The goal is to get you interested in the movie so that you have more of a chance of buying it.

While the use of a movie poster has changed since they first began, they are still an integral part of movie promotion. They will continue to give us a brief glimpse into the movie for many years to come.

I enjoy movie posters, from past to present...especially some of the old sci-fi posters from the 50's.
