After many years of staging wars with inanimate objects, I have come upon ways to prevail.
The easiest way to open anything is to procure the services of a nearby child. Child-proof caps? Sealed tops? Pull and pop? Grip and grab? The ordinary child will have these apart in no time and happily, proudly, hand you the opened container.
Problem solved. If you happen to have a child close by or awake.
In the event you do not, as in my case, I have found nefarious and possibly unlawful means to sabotage what the manufacturers have spent considerable time and expense on.
My favorite method is to wrap the plastic container in a towel, then apply a hammer to it. I then sort through the debris and place the tablets or pills in a wide mouth mason jar. For a label, I tape what remains of the original container on the jar, seal it with a lid and put it in my cupboard.
Other remedies for liquids and perishables such as mouthwash: Take a box-cutter and slice the tabs of the cap off. Be careful not to remove your fingers in the process. An alternative is to get a pair of wire-cutters and snip the tabs off. Once removed, there is nothing to prevent the cap from opening easily. This method works well on containers of anything from anti-freeze to bleach and detergent.
For those oh-so-frustrating, sealed-with-aluminum and pull-ups,(torture devices for the arthritic and elderly) I have a solution. My method is to place the container in a vice and open the seal by inserting a ¾" spade bit.and twirling it. Absent that, you can use a box-cutter and slice it off, or punch it out with a screwdriver.
After consulting with my pharmacist on this topic, she advised me the pharmacy will give you non-child-proof caps upon request. Just ask!
