The A-Team Movie Nears, Expectations Rise

Will the A-Team Movie Live Up to Expectations?

Mike McQuillian
On June 11th, 2010, 20th Century Fox will release the A-Team Movie in theatres, giving fans the chance to love (or hate) this remake of one of their childhood favorites.

Premise

The A-Team movie will begin as though the series never existed. A group of soldiers, falsely accused of a crime, escape the captors and become soldiers of fortune, Their soldiering activities will revolve around getting justice for those wronged by authority.

This is a good sign. The concept is staying the same. Thank God the studio didn't try to mold the A-Team movie into a kitchen-sink action film, adding robots and/or vampires to try to conform to current trends.

Another good sign: the A-Team movie will in no way be a "sequel" to the series. How horrible would it be if the A-Team movie were a "Where are They Now?" flick about the fugitives in their 60s?

Director

Joe Carnahan, the director of the A-Team movie, seems to have a history with action movies. Having directed Blood, Guts, Bullets & Octane, Narc, and Smokin' Aces, he looks like he has a foot firmly planted in the world of both summer blockbusters and more thoughtful dramas.

Carnahan may be a very good pick for the A-Team movie. Never short on action, the series also explored the sadness inherent to being on the run, never being able to settle.

Cast

While most of the A-Team movie's cast is unfamiliar to me, the inclusion of Liam Neeson as Hannibal makes me optimistic. If his leadership on-screen extends to his working with the actors off-screen, I think some pretty good performances are possible.

I am a bit worried about the B.A. Baracus role in the A-Team movie. Played so definitevely by Mr. T in the series, one has to wonder how anyone can fill his shoes in the A-Team movie. And the casting of a mixed martial arts fighter, rather than an actor, concerns me.

The A-Team movie may very well be a lot of fun. The ingredients are there for a great popcorn flick. We'll know soon enough, as the A-Team movie will be in theaters less than a week from now.
