The Audacity of Hope

The Audacity of Hate

Robert
"FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST" was the promise.

Prop 8 was the result.

This is a double criticism note. First of all, how can we achieve the greatest civil liberty of voting a black man into the oval office, while at the same steal away the right to marriage? How can ANYBODY vote for a black president as a vote for civil rights, while casting "yes on 8" on the same ballot? Even at our greatest moment in civil rights history, we have one of the greatest discrimination.

What's the difference that instead of "Whites only" signs, we have "Heterosexuals only" signs? What's the difference that instead of "No niggers allowed" signs, we have "No fags allowed" signs? What's the difference between the discrimination of color and the discrimination of sexuality? On Tuesday night, this AUDACITY of hope of equality was achieved for a couple hours, followed by the AUDACITY of hate. The world celebrated our progressive vote for a black president based on merit, overlooking race; but the world is blind to our regressive vote to CHANGE the traditional definition of marriage (according to CNN and our Supreme Court).

Americans be proud. Americans be ashamed.

Secondly, to those demonstrators in LA, who are furious against the decision on Prop 8, a demonstration against a popular vote is against everything America stands for. A vote is to count the voices of America, and the majority said "yes." It may be upsetting, but every losing side of every ballot feels the same way. We cannot allow demonstrations of every proposition of every election. That defeats the purpose of a vote. The proposition has been passed. It may be upsetting; however, shouting in the streets will do little good. It is stupid and childish. Instead of breaking against democracy by trying to go against a vote via a demonstration, these demonstrators should use the system of democracy. A proposition may be overturned by the Supreme Court if deemed unconstitutional. So instead of crowding the streets and contributing to LA traffic, put this obvious discrimination to the Judiciary. This is the sole reason we have the Supreme Court in the first place, to name things unconstitutional. Also, the Supreme Court has sided against the writing of Prop 8, so it shouldn't be a problem to gain the support of the Court to name this proposition unconstitutional.

Please, don't fight democracy. Use it.

My gay brother died of AIDS in '86, in the first wave. He loved children, would have loved to have been able to have a "legal" family.

Agreed. Its truly disturbing that so many folks would want to keep these basic rights from an entire group of people based on their sexuality alone. Conservatives get slammed for being homophobic but in a very liberal state, gay marriage was banned. Intolerance runs the gamut, sadly.

Wonderful article I am a true believer that everyone is created to love and no matter the love of a man and woman, man and man, woman and woman if it is real love then allow them the blessing of marriage.
