The Average Salary of a Phlebotomist

Phlebotomy representatives, or phlebotomists, perform venipunctures to draw blood from patients for tests. They also perform blood transfusions and take blood from people wishing to donate blood. They work in laboratories, blood banks, outpatient clinics and hospitals. They work various shifts and some work weekends and holidays, since people sometimes require blood tests or transfusions on an emergency basis. They work with people of all ages and with all sorts of medical problems.

Annual Earnings

According to Indeed.com, as of June 6, 2011, the average annual salary for phlebotomy representatives was $29,000. Indeed.com reports that the average salary for phlebotomy representatives was a full 60 percent lower than the average salary for all jobs in the U.S. at the same point in time.

Geographical Area

The average salary of phlebotomy representatives varies considerably from geographical area to geographical area. For instance, Indeed.com reports the average annual salary for phlebotomy representatives in California as $31,000 as of June 6, 2011. Meanwhile, the average salary was $33,000 in Washington, D.C. but only $27,000 in Oklahoma. Average salaries may be higher in large cities than in small towns.

Other Factors Affecting Salary

Other factors affecting the salary of phlebotomy representatives include things like amount of education, type of certification or registration, years of experience, any special skills and management responsibilities or other special responsibilities.
