'The Bachelor' Update: Do Contestants Have Sex on 'The Bachelor' TV Show?

Marilisa Kinney Sachteleben
The emotional drama of ABC's The Bachelor is over for another season. The producers have to keep The Bachelor in the public eye and what better way to do that than to answer our burning question. Do contestants have sex on The Bachelor? And the answer is a resounding, unsurprising, 'Well, Duhh...', according to oily, avuncular host of The Bachelor Chris Harrison.

The obligatory steamy hot tub scene at the end of The Bachelor leaves little to the imagination. What is left to ponder has been demystified by The Bachelor show producers and hosts. Evidently, each bachelor has sex with an average of three girls per season of The Bachelor. Bob Guiley, The Bachelor , reigning gigolo racking up a whopping five and one half sexual encounters. I echo Jane Boursaw of AOL News: 'wait, a half??' We are left to ponder whether she nixed it, he nixed it or Brewer's Droop intervened (I guess in this case it would be Champagne Droop...)

While my mathematical brain is enjoying a snarky chuckle over The Bachelor producers putting the numbers out there, my less cynical side is doing the math on other issues with The Bachelor; the physical, emotional and psychological issues. First of all, call me dark-minded, but there's a little issue of STDs. Are we to assume that Bachelors and Bachelorettes are impervious to sexually-transmitted disease?

Next issue with frequent sex on The Bachelor, and now it's my turn to say 'Duhhh'; the emotional and psychological issues. The Bachelor viewers are not given to know whether the girls/ guys who have sex on TheBachelor are the ones who actually end up with each other. If -3-5 encounters happen per season of The Bachelor, it ain't likely. So what we have here are 2-4 rejected sexual partners who add a generous dollop of gasoline to the already volatile emotional Molotov cocktail that characterizes The Bachelor.

I've always been loathe to say 'well this younger generation has no morals'. That's a pompous and dim view of people. Psychologically and emotionally, people do not change. Our wiring remains constant over time, by and large. All I can say to the producers and participants of The Bachelor is 'watch out; I'm afraid that this diddling with human emotions is going to come back to bite you'.

That's probably why some of those girls act so crazy and leave in hysterical tears. The show certainly gives them lots of opportunities to have sex in wonderfully romantic places!

I agree wholeheartedly, you can only play emotions for so long without someone losing it. Cheers, Mar
