"The Bachelorette" participant Bentley Williams is making a name for himself. In fact, Bentley is going to go down as the biggest villain ever on the show-if he hasn't already. His tactics have prompted many writers to curse his name on blogs, stories and editorials around the country. The comment section on some of the national stories have simply been a forum for Bentley bashing. In fact, it's hard to find anyone who is taking the side of Bentley Williams. If his goal was to be hated, he certainly seems to be on the correct route to accomplish that. He will go down as the most "hated" participant yet on "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" series.
But don't worry, Bentley bashers! It seems Bentley Williams will probably get the boot from "The Bachelorette" in the upcoming episode or two-or leave on his own. But he will also leave a mark that might scar his image forever. What did he do on the reality television show that was so bad? Not only did Bentley potentially break the heart of "The Bachelorette" Ashley Hebert, he also kind of bragged about how much he wasn't into her during on camera interviews. Bentley also said he wished "The Bachelorette" was Emily-although Emily has already bashed Bentley herself during one recent interview.
But what I don't get is not the fact that Ashley kept this guy around. She was obviously oblivious to his cruel words during the on-camera moments. What I don't understand is how the producers of this show let the whole drama play out for the sake of compelling television?
The show taped months ago. The producers of the show had to watch the drama unfold. During the course of the interviews, it seems somebody should have stepped in and kicked Bentley off the show for being such a jerk. But can you blame producers for keeping a guy around when he is guaranteed to create drama? I think so. It could have sent a very strong message to guys or girls who want to attempt this on down the road not to try it again-or you'll get the boot.
Instead, they let it all play out. At some point, the on camera interviews should have been made available to Ashley. Bentley flat out crossed the line from being a "bad boy" into completely cruel. What he said and did was uncalled for-and I am shocked but not completely surprised that somebody didn't step in and cast him off into creep land. If Ashley breaks down in the upcoming episode, I think the producers have a little guilt on their hands as well as Bentley for allowing something so blatantly obvious to happen.
Perhaps producers of "The Bachelorette" should create a new rule to drop participants off who are intentionally cruel and heartless. That was the case a few years ago when one of the female contestants was allegedly sneaking around with a producer. So why wasn't Bentley given the boot this time around? If they are going to toss somebody off the show for allegedly being unethical and sneaking around with a crew member, why wouldn't they give someone the boot for being manipulative, creepy and an all around jerk with bad intentions? The answer-it makes for good television. We'll all get to witness Ashley and go through her pain-even though some of that pain could have been avoided if somebody would have stepped up.
Chris Harrison recently told People that there wasn't "enough editing good or bad to save" Bentley. If it was that clear that Bentley was hell bent on destruction of the show and Ashley, why wasn't he kicked off? It seems that would have been the appropriate thing. But I kind of blame the producers or anyone who allowed this to happen. Bentley might be a grade one jerk-but somebody should have stepped in and pulled the plug on this "bad boy" gone wrong. The guy is getting away with a major assault on the "highly regarded Bachelorette love" and the producers just let it happen.
That's the whole problem I have with Bentley being portrayed as a huge jerk in the coming show or shows. ABC was well aware of it and let it unfold. I think there has to be some amount of accountability there from the producers who let this go on. Yet the show coming up on Monday will probably have huge ratings because the audience wants to see Bentley get kicked off and the aftermath with Ashley. I'll admit I am going to watch when it all goes down. But it didn't have to be that way. Bentley could have easily been dismissed during the second rose ceremony if Ashley were privy to those on camera interviews. That only makes me wonder-just how long would the producers of the show have let this go on? Could it have lasted nearly all season like the Wes appearance during the Jillian season of "The Bachelorette?"
It's interesting that sometimes "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" claim to be solely interested in helping these participants find love. The cruel hoax is we all must remember that it's just a television show after all. And when it comes to TV, ratings are always going to be priority number one. That's probably the message fans are taking from what has transpired this season on "The Bachelorette" with Bentley. Why else would they let someone talk trash, admit he doesn't like the girl and get away with it? Ashley is owed one big fat apology from the producers of the show. Never mind Bentley, he shouldn't get the opportunity to apologize. Ashley definitely deserved better. Is the show for the sake of true love of for the sake of ratings? For now, I think that question has officially been answered in my mind.
