Merely seconds after meeting Ali in the first episode Kasey told her, "I'm the one that will protect and guard your heart" and has since repeated those words to the point of exhaustion. Kasey also started off this episode by saying, "This is my future wife." That always cracks me up when contestants say that after spending practically five minutes with the person.
One of the most awkward of all moments came as Ali and Kasey sat on a blanket drinking champagne and watching the sunset and out of nowhere Kasey suddenly began to sing what appeared to be a very improvised song starting with...
"When I was flying...in the helicopter...over this amazing city...I looked to my left...and never saw something...so pretty."
Ali seemed surprised, followed by an awkward laugh. The scene was almost painful to watch. I can't help but wonder what the camera crew was thinking at that point. Ali said, "He's being a little cheesy. But I'm hoping he can just be real tonight."
After having free reign in the Natural History Museum Ali asked Kasey, "How is this different from your other relationships?" Kasey responded, "One reason - because you're Ali. You're everything I've ever wanted because you make me happy. I choose you." Ali kindly but with obvious incredulity expressed that his "lines" didn't feel real and seemed to lack some sincerity. To which Kasey said, "It's just my heart. Jump in, stay a while." Then more impromptu singing arrived.
Ali finally broke the news to Kasey that he wouldn't be getting the rose that night. But in typical reality TV fashion, an attempted twist was made when Kasey didn't immediately go home the way every other one-on-one was set up. He didn't get a rose, but he didn't go home either. So apparently Ali kept him around on a wait-and-see basis.
On the group date Ali and the guys arrived at the smash Broadway hit "The Lion King" where the men will compete for some alone time with Ali that night. The choreographer taught the guys some dance moves, clearly designed to get them out of their element and looking like total goofballs. But they had fun and it was entertaining for the bachelorette. Singing "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" followed the dancing.
Frontrunner Roberto knew he wasn't much of a singer but a simple observation caused him to stand out. Every other guy sang towards the piano player, so Roberto sang directly to Ali. The moment he began singing, nearly every guy watching did a mental head slap for not doing the same thing. It definitely made a difference. Roberto won the challenge and soon found out he and Ali would actually be appearing in the play.
While Ali and Roberto had a blast, the guys detested watching their interaction. Weatherman Jonathan gets the next award for cheesiest line after saying, "I don't want to see this. The forecast was for sunny skies and just out of the blue this storm craps in my face. Now I smell like a ___ storm and I need a shower."
Ali had been sick all day and lost her voice almost completely by the end of the night. All the guys felt bad. But Kirk took the initiative to encourage Ali to make it an early night. And as a result, Ali had Kirk walk her to her room and help her into bed...much to the unbridled jealousy of the other guys. Kirk got a goodnight kiss but then wisely took his leave so Ali could get some rest.
Chris L. went on this week's second one-on-one date, also his birthday. But by morning Ali's health had worsened. Instead of taking on the town together Ali had Chris to come relax with her in her suite. Chris said, "This is a real life situation. When you're married and one of you is sick, you want the other person to take care of you. She's looking for a husband and I think I've got what it takes."
Chris arrived with flowers and soup and spent the day hanging out as the two talked about their lives. Chris opened up more about moving home to Cape Cod when his mom got sick and helping to care for her as she passed away. Later in the day Ali decided she was feeling good enough to go out for a while. At dinner Ali gave Chris a phone so he could talk to his Dad on his birthday. The date also featured a private concert by Ali's favorite singer, Joshua Radin. And of course, Chris got a rose that night.
Back at the guy's suite Kasey was AWOL. He said he "needed to do something big" to show Ali his sincerity. So he went and got a tattoo on his wrist with "a shield protecting a heart." Arriving back at the suite with his tat covered, Kasey tried a pitiful lie about burning his wrist on the stove and being at the hospital all day. Winner of the next cheesiest line is Kasey as he later said, "I want to show her that I'm literally wearing my heart on my sleeve."
Oddly enough it was Justin who claimed righteous indignation about Kasey and said, "I don't want liars in the house." After Justin's confrontation Kasey came clean. Frank said later, "Getting a tattoo like that doesn't prove anything except that you're nuts." Ty said, "Kasey is getting crazier by the minute." And I'm inclined to agree. Kasey also believed the other guys "loved it and thought it was very inspiring." Huh?
Earlier that evening Justin had said about Kasey, "Hopefully, tonight he's going home with a bad tattoo." However, not having seen the tat yet, Ali kept Kasey around while Jonathan and Jesse were sent home. Jonathan was bummed but it seemed pretty obvious that he and Ali struggled in the connection / chemistry department from the get-go.
Next week we see Ali and the guys head to Iceland. And according to People Magazine and other sources, this season finds one contestant with a girlfriend (or two) and another guy wanting to go home and get back with his ex. Drama, drama, drama.
