The Backseat

Donna Cavanagh
I was with a friend who shines in the spotlight
Her comfort zone is when she is the star in the crowd
She has no care about all eyes upon her
She waltzes through a room strong and proud

I am in awe of this woman
To watch her in action literally brightens my day
She has no use for forced humility
She makes her own destiny and paves her own way

She says finding comfort in the backseat
Is a lesson that should never be taught
Unless it's for a romantic tryst
Then cover the windows so you don't get caught

She shocks me but she makes me think
This lesson in boldness is not just about fun
It's good to sit in the driver's seat
Everyone at times needs to be number one

She warns that this takes a lot of practice
When one has been schooled that others should always come first
It takes patience to adopt this new philosophy
If not controlled it can become an unquenchable thirst

She warns with this power comes responsibility
You have to be willing to show others the ropes
You must give those around you the same encouragement
You build their confidence and restore their hopes

Sometimes we jump into the backseat
So others can get a chance to plot their course
But that seat is not a life assignment
To wallow there brings only regret and remorse

She does sound confident. I am a back seat type of person most of the time.

Great poem and we do tend to go back and forth from the front to the back seat depending on the situation.

What a great life lesson! Historically I was pretty good a wallowing. Not now.

I totally agree Donna. We must remember that the "back seat" is a temporary resting place not a permanent position. And the driver's seat is a place of empowerment with new and exciting responsibilities. Learning to enjoy both is the lesson!

Well written, although I believe that true wisdom teaches us to take whichever seat is best depending on the situation. The trick is discerning which is best... excellent poem!
