The Back-to-School Essay

Vicki Messer
My ten-year-old granddaughter, Jorden, returned to school on Monday, August 11th. Before she did, she and her parents attended a parent/teacher conference in order to meet the new teacher and let Jorden see where her classroom is located. This meeting was designed to alleviate a lot of anxieties associated with that dreaded first day of school.

Upon arrival, the teacher introduced himself and showed Jorden where her assigned seat will be. He handed her a sheet of paper and a pen and asked her to write an essay about what things excite her and what things cause her to be afraid. Jorden and my son and daughter-in-law were taken aback by the request, but Jorden quickly complied with the request and began writing what turned out to be a full page essay.

The teacher then focused his attention on the parents, handing them a stack of about 15 pages of information to fill out. They did not work as quickly as Jorden and asked if they could take the rest of the paperwork home and return it on Monday with Jorden.

It seems that this teacher is on top of things! He will likely prove to be a challenging teacher for my granddaughter and she will likely be stretched in ways that will truly benefit her as she prepares for middle school next year.

It seems that Mr. Jones (not his real name) is a wonderful example of what makes a great teacher. He took time to talk with the parents while Jorden was busy doing her first assignment. I'm sure he gained many useful insights into Jorden and her home life. The essay that Jorden wrote will further provide him with the things that both excite and panic Jorden. It will also show him where she is in her language and writing skills and penmanship. He always was able to see that Jorden is a very compliant student who is able to follow oral instructions. I suspect he was also able to gauge something about her attitude as she complied with the writing assignment that was given before the official start of school.

Jorden attends school in the state of Georgia and she is excited about going to back to school this year. As an only child, she looks forward to all the new friends she will meet this year and she is also looking forward to moving on to middle school next year.

I also need to say that Jorden, upon learning who her teacher is for this school year, was somewhat unhappy at first. It seems this teacher has a reputation for assigning homework on the first day of school. However, that reputation will now be changed because Mr. Jones assigned work before the first day of school!

So, it is back-to-school for Jorden in the state of Georgia, and her first assignment is already completed!

So glad to see a grandparent involved in the education of the younger set-- we teachers can't do it all and opening those lines of communication is a very important first step! I hope Jorden does well this year! And send in an apple for Mr. Jones!
