The Backyard Birdfeeder - Part II

Donna Cavanagh
My neighbor who is a young single stud
Has no patience for keeping his yard always trimmed
So, he brought in friends who came with chainsaws
And the buzzing didn't stop until daylight was dimmed

At the end, not one tree or shrub was standing
There was firewood for the neighborhood to use for years
What once was my line of privacy landscaping
Stood no more; I was reduced to frustration and tears

His lilac bush has been the birds' launching pad
From its branches to my feeder was just a short hop
When the lilac was cut, they looked at me in dismay
With eyes that said, "Why didn't you make him stop?"

What could I do my winged friends?
It grew in his backyard -- not in mine
Rest assured, there will always be food in your feeder
And you can always rest on my side of the property line

So, I have made plans to plant some new growth
For the sake of the birds and my privacy as well
I can't walk around in my nightgown anymore
My once private yard is now public hell

I will plant new shrubs and trees for the birds' convenience
I might even have to put up a higher fence
The finches and sparrows need some serious shelter
And I need landscaping that is tall and dense

Until the new shrubs have taken root
On my picket fence the birds will perch
Giving me the evil eye as if this is all my fault
Hey, I didn't cut down your stupid birch!

Such pressure from the feathered faithful
For now, a full feeder will keep content my backyard choir
Next spring, they will have a choice of new homes to build their nests
And I can walk around naked if I so desire

"I didn;t cut down your stupid birch"!! There's something you don't hear every day. You'd think the birds would be more understanding :)
