Watch a few episodes and you'll know why kids like the show so much. The characters are skillfully computer animated. Every episode is full of catchy tunes and choreographed dances from the characters. Did I say catchy tunes? I really meant songs that get so stuck in your head that you wake up the next day still singing them.
The show is based on five cute little characters who use there imagination to turn their backyard into far off places. There is Pablo who is a likable little blue penguin, and likes to freak out a little every episode. Austin is a level-headed purple kangaroo. Tasha is a slightly annoying, know-it-all yellow hippo. Tyrone is a friendly orange moose is always upbeat. Then there is Uniqua. Uniqua is... well, I've never been exactly sure what Uniqua is.
Uniqua is pink with polka dots, and has bug-like antennae. Her polka dots make her look like a lady bug, but her head shape and antennae make her look like an ant. It had always bothered me that I couldn't figure out what Uniqua was supposed to be, so I decided to do a little research on the web.
It didn't take long to figure out that I wasn't the only person pondering Uniqua's species. Like me, many people had theorized that she was an ant or lady bug, be we were all incorrect. Uniqua is not only her name, but also her species. She is completely unique.
I'll have to admit this answer didn't satisfy me at first. I was looking for a label for her, but I guess being unique is completely appropriate for a character in a children's animated show like the Backyardigans.
Regardless of what Uniqua is, the Backyardigans is the highest quality kid's show that I have ever seen. I'm sure our DVD collection of Backyardigans shows will continue to grow, and I'll have many more days with Backyardigans songs embedded deep in my brain.

Post a CommentThis "pretty in Pink" young lady has caused a hugh up roar between my four children and my huband. Shes an ant no she is a pig (we just cant see her tail)my six year old. No shes a ladybug... but my husband and I think we have the best answer yet... she could be a fast dancing, sweet little SNAIL...that is the best educated guess a late thirty something mom and dad can come up with.... but of coarse the kids think we are nuts!!!!
I always thought she was an Alien, but she is in fact as her name says: "Unique" species of her own!
I've decided that she is a giraffe... polka dots and the things on her head... makes sense to me
Uniqua
A curious, self-confident and high-spirited pink Uniqua (Uniqua is the name of her species) wearing pink polka-dotted overalls. She has a pair of antennae on top of her head, the function of which are unknown. She is almost always sweet and friendly, though her strong opinions and occasional stubbornness get in the way of her relationships. She is more of a tomboy unlike her friend Tasha, often imagines herself in roles requiring brains and fortitude (scientist, pirate captain, etc.), and loves books (as seen in episodes such as "The Masked Retriever"). But she can be sometimes more "girly" than Tasha in a few episodes. She is the only character to be seen in every episode.
it's killing me also not knowing what uniqua is, but i'm so relief that i'm not the only one, cause i fell dumb as a 35 y.o dad which i'm pretty sure my 2 y.o son will ask me sooner or later.
About the songs??? some of them are greatly stick inside my head, love them better than any recent pop songs.
Anyhow, whatever Uniqua is, i think she's the best dancer among the others :)
My mom and I think that Uniqua is an ant!
I thought the name made this clear.
I think shes just supposed to be unique...like no other creature before her.
You're not the only one bugged by this! My kids ask me every other episode or so, wanting to know what she is! They know all the others, just can't get a fix on her. And here I am looking like the stupid mom that doesn't know what she is. Thanks Backyardigans!
Poor Chris, I'm sure you miss those days as I do, I beg my kids to watch it, I love that show. The peer pressure of school has replaced our beloved show with backugan, spongebob, and a bunch of other shows I wont let them watch but they seem to know everything about them anyway. I'll take the unique Uniqua any day!
