Filipinos pride themselves on the Ifugao Rice Terraces because it is considered to be the Eighth Wonder of the World. The Banaue Rice Terraces are located in the Ifugao mountains. These rice terraces are man made and were carved by hand for the most part (others were used with equipment) by the native ancestors of Ifugao about 2000 years ago. It is a favorite attraction in the Philippines whether you are a tourist or a local.

The beautiful Banaue Rice Terraces are situated on the sides of mountains and are about 4000 square miles and are positioned 5000 feet above the sea level. Above the terraces, there is an irrigation that was made from the rain forest by the native people. It is said that if one were to actually measure the length of the rice terraces from one end to the other, the entire distance of them would be half of the earth.

The Ifugao people are comprised of three different cultural groups. They are Tuwali, Kalanguya and the Ayangan. The Ifugao are recognized as friendly people to everyone including visitors. The most a Ifugao local owns is half of an acre that generates about 1100 pounds of rice that isn't milled or what is called "palay" in Tagalog and it will be harvested for about six to eight months during the cropping season.

Hotel accommodations will never be difficult for any visitors here as there are several hotels. Then near the town of Banaue there are lodging houses and all are available at prices that are more than reasonable. It will cost visitors about 25 to 33 dollars. There are also locals who are willing to accept borders in their homes for anyone who is interested. If visitors are looking to buy souvenirs such as customary Ifuago weaved items as well as carvings that are made of wood, one can purchase these at any local souvenir shop in the area. These souvenirs are made by hand by the Ifugao people.

To arrive at Ifugao, one must go through the town known as Bagabag which is in Nueva Vizcaya. Then from Bagabag, you will go to the town capital called Lagawe. While on route, be careful as the road zigzags and it can be dangerous for drivers. When you are traveling, be sure to take note of the beautiful views of the rice terraces. Visitors can also see them from their private hotel room. One might considering bringing long sleeved shirts or a jacket when visiting as the weather here is cold.

A great place for tourists to visit is Barangay Hapao in the town of Hundungan which offers some of the broader views of the spectacular rice terraces. The spider web configuration of the terraces can be seen also from Hundungan.
