The Baseball Winter Meetings are Over - What are the Results?

Daniel Rein
The winter meetings ended this past Monday in December. Here are the big free agents who cashed in and all of the teams that won and lost at the annual meetings.

Winners: Los Angeles Dodgers- The Dodgers signed a long list of players including Jason Schmidt who signed a 3 year deal worth 47 million dollars. They also signed Luiz Gonzalez

Red Sox: The Red Sox have been one of baseball's largest spenders this off-season. They spent 50 million dollars just for the right to sign Matsuzaka, a Japanese pitcher. Then they will need to spend at least 10 more million per year that they sign him for. That will probably be a 3 year deal. The Red Sox also signed JD Drew and it looks like they will keep Manny Ramirez, one of baseball's best hitters. They signed Julio Lugo to play shortstop for them.

The Cubs are by far this year's biggest spenders as they signed both Alfonso Soriano and Aramis Ramirez to long term deals. They also signed lefty pitcher Ted Lily to a four year deal worth 40 million dollars. And they signed manager Lou Pinella to a 3 year deal worth 10 million. It amazing the amount of money that they have spent this off-season.

Detroit Tigers: They get their World Series roster in tact and got the slugger they craved in Garry Sheffield.

Biggest Losers:

The San Francisco Giants are in turmoil right now. They lost outfielder Moises Alou to the Mets. They did sign Bruce Bochy to be their manager but their team has no talent. Jason Schmidt and Ray Durham left through free agency. They vastly overpaid for Barry Bonds at 1 yr 16 million dollars when no team was willing to give Bonds anywhere close to that amount.

Other significant signings and trades:

The Yankees resigned one of their best pitchers, Mike Mussina and got several promising major league ready pitching prospects that they need for the future.

The Phillies got Freddy Garcia from the White Sox.

The Houston Astros signed Carlos Lee to a big contract but could be in a huge hole if they do not resign Roger Clemens who might retire as well as Andy Pettite.

The Athletics lost MVP candidate Frank Thomas who had a monster year but signed DH hitter Mike Piazza to a one year 8.5 million dollar deal.

The Blue Jays signed Frank Thomas to bolster their lineup.

The NY Mets signed Moises Alou and resigned Tom Glavine. They are the odds on favorite to sign free agent pitcher Barry Zito.

Adam Eaton and Vincente Paddilla made off like bandits with the huge contracts they got. Eaton has had a history of shoulder surgery and has never won more than 12 games in his career. Yet he still received a contract paying him 8.5 million per year.
