The Basic Necessities for Hunting the Trophy Deer

Joe Lemaster
Hunting is sort of like a tradition in my family and is highly thought of. Many people hunt for big game animal all around the world. I'm more of a white tail hunter myself. So I would like to name some of the necessities that applies to every hunter that plans on bringing home that trophy buck.

Start out with the area you're going to be hunting. Is it cold or warm; what kind of clothing will you need? All hunters know that camouflage clothing is a necessity for hunting. All the way from your boots to the hat you wear. Now I live in Ohio so we do our hunting in southern Ohio. The time of year is in November and it's usually cold. I wear a normal pear of jeans and a tan colored shirt, over top of that I wear my camouflage overalls then a big camouflage coat. Also since you are going away for a couple of days you might need to get a hotel to stay in while you're not in the tree. You're definitely going to need some extra money for food. Also for hunting you will need certain permits and tags for when you get a deer.

Now you got your gear and every thing ready. It's time to move out. A lot of hunters go to the extremes when it comes to deer hunting. Some ideas you can use to help prevent the deer from spotting you or picking up your scent is the various types of sprays that cover your scent. You could also buy a bar of soap that is designed to cover your scent. All you do is when you take a shower instead of using normal soap you use the deer scent soap. Another good idea is when you are not hunting you need to store your hunting clothes in a scented bag. Somewhere so they are not getting any other scents on them that a deer might smell. If you put them in a bag and put a bunch of deer scent in there with the clothes they will be ready for you when you're ready to hunt.

Practice with your bow or gun is another must for any hunter. Set up a target in the backyard and get about 20 yards away and practice shooting at the target and adjusting your sites. What ever you do don't use your good arrows while practicing. They have special arrows for practicing. Use practice arrows so you don't ruin your good arrows.
After you have mastered you're aiming from 20 yards start moving back and shooting from a further distance. I also recommend that you get in your tree stand in the summer and practice shooting down at a target so you are use to that particular situation.

When you actually go hunting you have to be very quiet because deer can hear and smell for miles. It would also help to go hunting with a buddy so if one or the other gets one you can have help putting the deer on the back of your truck or getting the first pictures of your trophy deer.

The last piece of advice I would like to give you is to go to the area you are going to be hunting and just spend a couple of days sitting in your stand and scoping out the place. Use a pair of binoculars and keep your eyes open. Watch for deer and where they are coming from and what they are eating. Make sure to pay attention to the time of year because deer act differently during each part of the season. As long as you practice your shooting and scope out your hunting grounds you should be ok. Make sure your wearing the right clothing and they're scented properly. You will be well prepared for the big buck that comes walking under your stand in the early morning.

I had a friend and her husband hunted. It use to make her so mad that after she washed his hunting clothes he would take them outstide and drag them around and then store them in a bag with rocks and leaves. I think he actually preferred she didnt wash them. ugh

I think that the only fair way to hunt deer is with a bow and arrow, but it would be a shame to allow them to starve to death. So, I guess a gun is okay too!
