The Basics of Buying a Mountain Bike

Thinking about buying a mountain bike? Here's an effective guide on what to consider and look for when you make this purchase.

DETERMINE YOUR BUDGET

Be prepared to spend at least $300 for a decent-quality mountain bike that provides a satisfactory performance. Beginners should avoid expensive bikes since they don't yet know if they will become frequent riders. Remember to leave room in your budget for accessories that add convenience and protection to the cycling experience, such as a helmet, gloves, tools, lock, fenders, bags, and lights for riding after dark.

A used bike can be a sensible cost-saving option. Look for one that was ridden lightly and well-maintained, without a lot of wear and tear. In the long run, the products from reputable bicycle manufacturers, though more costly, are a much wiser investment than cheaply-made bikes in department stores.

KNOW YOUR RIDING CONDITIONS

Mountain bikes can be used for a variety of purposes, including commuting to work, touring, and recreational spins in the countryside. If you intend to do mostly hard-core off-road riding on rough trails, there are several "suspension" features that help to cushion the ride and make it smoother while also greatly improving your control over the bike. These include suspension in the front of the bike (the "fork"), the rear, and the seatpost. Special disk brakes have better stopping power in the wet and mud.

However, these features also have drawbacks: they are more expensive, heavier, more attractive to thieves, and more likely to break down than ordinary parts. A beginning off-road rider should consider a bike with only front suspension ("hardtail"), or perhaps even a "rigid" bike with no suspension fork. For those who plan to use their bikes on paved surfaces and for general-purpose riding, a rigid bike is probably the best choice - and the least expensive.

LOOK FOR QUALITY COMPONENTS

The frame is the heart of a bicycle, so try to get the best one possible. Most are made of steel or aluminum, which is lighter and more popular, but neither material has a clear advantage. Be sure to avoid cheap "high-tensile" steel and look instead for higher quality "chro-moly".

Components are the parts such as brakes and derailleurs (gears), and makers like the Shimano company offer different models for each component. Generally, the more expensive models are lighter, last longer, and are easier to maintain. Mediocre components can always be replaced and upgraded if necessary. Tires come in a huge variety of tread patterns and widths to fit any type of riding condition: pavement, off-road, mud, etc.

GET A GOOD FIT

It is essential to buy a bike that fits you properly. To start, stand over the bike and make sure there is adequate crotch clearance - at least 3 to 4 inches above the top tube. Then sit on the saddle and grasp the handlebar in a riding position. Do you have to stretch too far, putting too much pressure on your arms, or do you seem too cramped and upright?

For some riders, an upright position feels the most relaxed, while others prefer to lean low over the handlebar, reducing wind resistance and increasing speed. To determine the position that suits you best, test a few different bikes. The top priority is to feel balanced and comfortable.

The most important thing to remember is to have fun, and ride safe!
