The Basics of Defeating Drug Addiction

Jacob Malewitz
You're not sure why, but something keeps happening to you. It happens again and again. You try to change your behavior, but it keeps coming back. You try to sit down and think, but it doesn't work. While putting your head around your addiction-your disease-you see all the reasons to quit, but cannot seem to do it on your own. Exactly. You can't do it alone; Drug addiction is defeated with help. This article provides the basics, from developing a system of recovery to asking for help. Drug addiction is no joke; millions actively use drugs. Again, you are not alone.

Only Alone with Yourself:

The only problem here is you. Drug addiction isn't fun. Sometimes it feels fun. However, when you reach outside yourself for help-from friends and family-there will be a force within you. You begin to ask for help from friends and family. It leads you to defeating drug addiction, putting the drugs down once and for all.

Finding the Means to Win:

Maybe you're not ready for all that. Maybe the drugs made you happy when you were sad ... made you smile on the coldest days ... or just made you forget everything for a moment. Finding ways to win means taking the next step. I am not saying "Quit now," as a knockout blow to a drug addiction is impossible. You must go round one with the drugs.

Winning Round One, Day 1:

You can win this battle first by reaching out. All alone with yourself-and just trying to quit by yourself-will rarely work out. Round one means going outside yourself for help. Where do you go for help? It's time for professionals. Friends and family will be your anchor in this recovery, but doctors will keep you from losing your mind, and drug counselors will know exactly how to provide support.

It is said, the first few days are the hardest part of your addiction. If you can survive it, the withdrawals and pain, you have a good chance.

Going for the Knockout:

You can't quite beat drug addiction forever-it stays within you, waiting. The substance abuse group Narcotics Anonymous has an old line: While you are staying clean, your addiction is doing pushups in your mind. It prepares. The knockout blow comes when you finally realize all that you were doing to yourself. Think about it: if someone did that to you, putting all those chemicals in your system, would you be nice with them? There is nothing pretty about addiction. Drugs destroy lives.

Seeing all the Reasons to Continue Living:

Perhaps during your addiction you experienced plenty of anger. Maybe you didn't want to live. Now it's time to live. It's not unheard of-actually common-for drug addicts to want to end their lives. There are other roads: finding a spiritual side, discovering your family support again, and making friends with "normal" people. This is just the beginning, but it should get you started on defeating drug addiction.
