Some kits come already put together. You can buy these at your local store. They are good, but I prefer to have my own homemade first aid kit. This way I know it has what we use and not full of things we do not use.
One thing that I like to keep in the first aid kit is wipes. Wipes work very good for so many different purposes. You can use them to clean your hands when you have no soap or water. You can use them to wash a scraped knee. There are other numerous ways that wipes will come in handy.
Along the same lines as the wipes is antibacterial hand cleaner. This is really good for camping and other activities when you are not close to water to be able wash your hands.
I am a big fan of peroxide. Peroxide is great to clean out wounds. You can buy a small bottle that will fit perfectly inside your first aid kit. You can also buy it in a spray.
Another great item to have in your first aid kit is an antibiotic ointment. This works great on scrapes, cuts and bug bites. You can get a small tube of it for very cheap. I have found the store brand works just as great as the name brand. In fact, if you look at the ingredients listed on both brands they are usually the same.
Of course what would a first aid kit be without bandaids? It is a very good idea to have several bandaids of all types and sizes. An ace bandage is good to have in your first aid kit for wrist and ankle injuries.
Another item that comes in handy for my family is benadryl and allergy pills. Several of my family members suffer from allergies so having their allergy pills and an antihistamine comes in real handy.
Something you may not have realized that would be great to keep in your first aid kit is a pair of scissors. You will find that they will come in handy.
Cold packs are also very handy to have around. Especially if you experience a spranged ankle or something that requires ice. They are relatively inexpensive and it would be a good idea to have several on hand since usually they are made to use just once.
Another item that may not normally be in a first aid kit that I like to have is eye drops. I wear contacts so they always come in handy. They also come in handy if you get something in your eye and need to wash it out.
Since I am prone to have headaches keeping some excedrin or tylenol is always a good idea for us. If you have small children the liquid kind is good to have on hand. Although you will need to be careful about leaving this in the heat for a long period of time. You may just want to add this in right before you go somewhere.
A thermometer is something else that will be good for your first aid kit. You can use the regular, digital or the ear kind.A good pair of tweezers is a must have for your first aid kit. It can help get splinters out.
It is easy to get your first aid kit together. Just make a list and gather it all at one time. The next item of business is to find something to hold it all.
