The Basics of Liposuction

Everything You Need to Know If You or Someone You Love is Going Under the Knife

Liposuction is easily one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the United States. In fact, every year thousands of men and women choose to invest in liposuction of the abdomen, arms, thighs, neck, back and arms. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (APS), the number of people who undergo liposuction cosmetic surgery is about 400,000 per year.

What is liposuction?
Liposuction serves to remove unwanted fat deposits in areas that are diet/exercise resistant such as the neck, inner and outer thighs, abdomen, arms and love handles. The procedure re-shapes the body, leaving patients with an improved body contour. This is done by removing fat deposits and tightening the overall shape of your body.

Who is a good candidate?
An ideal liposuction candidate is within 30% of their ideal weight and should have firm skin with elasticity. Those with stretch marks and loose and/or saggy skin are not primary candidates and should consider other surgical options. Candidates should not have experience rapid weight gain/loss within the last six months.

What is the recovery time and level of pain?
The level of pain associated with liposuction varies depending on the type of procedure, but is usually mild. Most patients are able to return to work after one to three weeks and can begin exercising after two to four weeks. Expect swelling for two weeks to two months (swelling is minimized by a garment bandage), bruising for two days to two weeks and numbness for several weeks. The final result will likely be seen in one to six months time!

What is the cost?
The cost of liposuction varies greatly depending on several factors. The cost will be more expensive depending on your location. For example, in Los Angeles you will find higher prices compared to a city like Indianapolis or Denver, Colorado. Note that while there are great doctors in both areas, the west coast tends to specialize in cosmetic procedures. The overall cost also varies depending on the size of the area where liposuction will take place. In general, the price ranges from $3000 to $10,000 per client.

Before plastic surgery, you should be emotionally stable, have realistic expectations and understand the risks associated with your procedure. Also note that in most cases, it is far easier (and safer) to try simple diet and exercise to lose unwanted fat. Liposuction is usually reserved for clients who have small amounts of fat deposits that they cannot get rid of no matter how strict of a diet/exercise routine they follow.
