The Basics of Remaining Healthy While Being Unemployed

With the rise in unemployment there are many things which will be placed aside when people lose their jobs. Unfortunately, health may be one of them. When you are unemployed, your health is the last thing you need to let go of. Declining health can lead to increased depression, sickness, stress, weight gain, and other physical and mental problems. There is a way to be unemployed and remain healthy.

Being healthy while being unemployed can reduce chances for fatigue, stress, depression, heart problems and diabetes. Using these tricks and tips while unemployed not only helps sustain your energy level but also keeps the health issues mentioned above from gaining ground. Many ideas below are simple to start with minor changes in the daily routine. Almost all of these can be accomplished with either little or no cost. All of these tips can give you better health and a better lifestyle, both now and when you do get back to work again.

Using Food

Since being unemployed means cutting back on things, start with the things you can do without anyhow. Start with the caffeine, salt and sugar in your diet. Limiting salt not only reduces the risks of high blood pressure and heart conditions, but also keeps internal fluid levels at proper levels. Cutting back on refined sugar and carbohydrates will help moderate energy levels, mood swings and effects to blood pressure. Caffeine has a similar reaction in the body to processed sugar. Excess amounts of caffeine can lead to irritability, severe headaches, and nerve-related issues.

How do you cut back without losing energy and flavor? Replacing the sugar and salt with other natural items will provide the same benefits. Being healthy while being unemployed is a simple matter of finding easy replacements for these including using garlic, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds as instant energy snacks. To get longer effects from an energy boost try banana slices or broccoli spears. Build a protean rich diet to help maintain blood sugar levels at their peak.

Being unemployed can bring higher levels of stress. Staying healthy while unemployed will require finding ways to reduce this stress. There are foods available for low cost which can help do this. Examples include fruit such as bananas, grapes, and kiwi. Green vegetables including lettuce also help. The use of basil and cinnamon can help also. Grains such as barley and oats are great stress reducers. Another idea is the use of ginseng in tea or a seasoning in some recipes.

More ways of being healthy while being unemployed is to increase your use of pasta and grains. You can easily stretch meals with bread and pasta included in the deal. Dumplings and pasta dishes add fiber and healthy fats while lowering the per meal cost. Another idea to give yourself the needed vitamins and minerals is to add, or increase, white meat, fruits and vegetables into your diet. Mexican and Oriental dishes are great for this.

Being unemployed increases fatigue and can cause an unbalanced metabolism. Being unemployed and being healthy is easy if you alter your habits to eating five small meals instead of three or less. This helps avoid weight gain, muscle loss and keeps your energy levels up. Another idea for fatigue fighting, along the multi-meal option, is the use of avocados, lentils and nuts, or raspberries as snacks.

Rest, Recreation, and a Positive Mind

Beyond rethinking diets as a way of being healthy while being unemployed, rest is the second largest factor to health. Enjoying quiet time, getting enough sleep, and having fun with free time helps provide three critical aids. The mind is less active because it is not focused on unemployment; this stops the run-down feeling, allows you to focus and concentrate on other things, and allows creative solutions to form. Awareness and alertness are higher and can allow you to see opportunities which would have been crowded out by worry and anxiety. The body is allowed to naturally renew itself because it isn't in a constant heightened state.

Creating a positive atmosphere around you also helps with being healthy while being unemployed. The use of natural lighting and companionship during the day helps support natural healing properties in your body. Volunteering is another way to take your mind off of unemployment, provide enjoyable activity, and can lead to other possibilities. If you have trouble coping with stress and unemployment, seeking counseling is a useful option as well.
