What is Stock Photography?
The easiest way to describe stock photography is that its photography that already exists. It's already been shot by photographers and people who want to use this photography can purchase a license to use it. Then they are free to use the photography without paying royalties or getting in trouble for using another person's image. There are different degrees of licensing, which is something we'll cover a bit later on.
Stock photography software allows people to find images and buy the licenses quickly. You'll learn more about this later on as well.
What is Stock Photography Software?
Stock photography software is software which allows people to find images quickly. A stock photography software program may contain an archive of thousands or perhaps millions of images. When a customer comes across an image that they really like, they can then use the software to purchase the licensing rights to it.
Why Use Stock Photography?
If you're writing a book and are in desperate need of photographs for it, you have a couple of options. The first is to hire a photographer to take the necessary images. This is very expensive because you will be paying not just the photographer, but also the subject of the photograph. It can cost a lot of money to do this, and for those who don't have a bunch of money to spend, this can cause a problem. The other option is to license images that are relevant to your book and use those.
Even if you're not writing a book, but instead are in need of images for a magazine, article, or need something for a movie poster, stock photography can be a tremendous tool to you. You don't have to spend money on a photographer or subject, you don't have to become incredibly involved in an artistic process, and you get the images delivered to you pretty much instantly. It's very convenient because you don't have to throw yourself into yet another thing. All you have to do is pick the images and buy the license. It's that simple. If you're using stock photography software, it'll be that much more convenient.
Are There Disadvantages?
As with anything else, there are some disadvantages to stock photography. The biggest of these is that you are not involved in the creative process. If you are very picky about what kind of images you want, you may not be able to find these in a photo archive (this is another phrase to describe stock photography). Thus, stock photography is probably not the best idea for you because you won't be happy with what you're getting.
Types of Licenses
There are two types of stock photography licenses. With the first type, called royalty-free licensing, a customer purchases a license for a photograph and is then able to use the photograph an unlimited amount of times. They do not need to pay anymore fees because it's theirs to use however often or whenever they want. This is good for people who want to use the same image several times.
The other type of license is called rights-managed. In this case, you'll be paying a fee every time you use the photograph. This is a good license to get if you're only planning on using the image once.
What Can I Expect to Pay?
Like we previously mentioned, one of the best things about stock photography, and more specifically, stock photography software, is that it is so affordable. You can get some very good deals on images. For instance, you may be able to purchase a stock photo for less than a dollar. That's very inexpensive, considering it might cost you upwards of $200 to produce that same photo by hiring someone to do it for you. Of course, not all stock photography is this cheap, and if you want the best stock photography, you will have to pay a bit more. However, it'll be well worth whatever you pay.
You may have to pay to use stock photography software, although most stock photography software publishers make this available for free.
