The Basics of Washing and Waxing Your Car

Heather Wood
Keeping the inside of your car clean is just as important as keeping the car exterior free from elements that could cause damage. Crumbs and other food remnants, stones, dirt, or mud dragged in from the outside, cigarette butts or smoke, can ruin the car interior and in turn decrease its value. So, make it a habit to clean the car interior, too, whenever you wash its exterior. Here are some basic tips for cleaning the interior:

Use a vacuum for cleaning the upholstery and the floor, including the areas under the seats.

Scrub or wash mats with soap and water. Do not put them back unless they're dry.

Use non-ammonia glass cleaner for the inside of the glass and once dry, polish with crumpled newspaper.

Wipe the steering wheel, console, dashboard, and the inner side of doors with a damp cloth.WASHING THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR CAR

The best way to care properly for your car is to clean its exterior regularly to protect it from damage caused by the elements, dirt, bird droppings, and pollutants. These are the basics to keep in mind when you begin washing your automobile.

Do not wash your car under the heat of the sun or the water used for washing will evaporate fast, leaving spots.

Use shampoo/soap designed for vehicles (not basic cleaners).

Wash the wheels first - using soapy water, brush rubber tires to take off / remove dirt. Rinse and finish off using a sponge or washcloth.

Using a chamois cloth or a cotton chenille pad, wash the car surface. Note: wash from the top going down.

Rinse with flowing water (water from a hose).

Polish dry glass with crumpled newspaper.WAXING YOUR CAR

Your car's finish can be threatened by several factors like pollutants, rain, salt, stones, dirt, and even snow. The best way to ensure protection against such harmful elements is to wax your car regularly.

Wash the outside of your car thoroughly before applying the wax.

Apply a pre-wax cleaner before waxing. A pre-wax cleaner deep cleans to remove previous wax remnants, stains, and water spots.

Using a damp cloth, apply wax to one body panel at a time. Apply wax in a circular motion.

Let wax dry for a few minutes then use a smooth cloth to buff the panel into a brilliant shine.

One coat of wax is often enough but you always have the option to apply a second coating. Allow at least a 48-hour interval between the first and second coatings.CAR WAXES:

Natural waxes - This type of waxes will provide good protection and exceptional shine but they need to be re-applied every six weeks or so.

Synthetic waxes - Last for 8-9 months between applications and are quite easy to apply.Remember, if you love your car, you must take good care of it. Keep your car in great shape - wash and wax properly on a regular basis.
