The Battle of I-10

R.A. Riter
The Battle of I-10 is a college rivalry. This rivalry is between the University of Texas at El Paso, or UTEP, and New Mexico State University, or NMSU. Both of these two teams are located along the Interstate 10 and the two cities where these teams play, El Paso and Las Cruces, is connected by this highway. El Paso is the city where UTEP plays at and Las Cruces is the home of New Mexico State.

The rivalry between these two teams started in 1914. UTEP has had more success in the series, winning the annual matchup forty-nine times. NMSU has won this game thirty-five times. There have also been two ties. The winner of this game gets two trophies. One of them, which is the older one, is called the Silver Spade. It is a replica of a shovel that was found in a mine that are located near Las Cruces. The other trophy is called the Mayor's Cup but is usually referred to as the Brass Spittoon. This was added in 1982. Both of these trophies goes to the victor for the entire year until the next matchup.

Because these two schools are so close, a rivalry was a natural development. These two teams first played in 1914 and met up every year until World War II. The series was resumed after the war. Then, UTEP played NMSU every year until 2001, when they decided to cancel the trip to Las Cruces in order to schedule another home contest against a division I team. They did meet up in 2002, where NMSU blew out UTEP, but did not play in 2003. They did meet in 2004 where UTEP got revenge and blew out NMSU 45-0. This was the biggest margin of victory in fifty-five years. UTEP went on a brief three game winning streak, but NMSU has won the past two rivalry games. In 2008, NMSU beat UTEP by one point. This was the first time they won in El Paso since 1994. This was also the first time that NMSU won back to back games against NMSU in fourteen years. The winner, recently, has usually been the home team. Eight of the past ten games have been won by the home team. Other than the road victory mentioned above, UTEP was able to win in Las Cruces, the home of NMSU, in 2005. All of the information is as of 2008.
