The Beach: A Family's Favorite Vacation Activity

Debra McCostlin
When planning my family's yearly vacation I spend an exorbitant amount of time on the Internet searching the websites of every attraction of our chosen vacation destination. I'm looking for activities that are going to make every member of my family's summer vacation memorable. Meeting the desires of each person's vacation dream can be a time-consuming and daunting task. One child wants amusement parks and action, another child wants society and shopping, the husband wants rest and relaxation and I want to indulge in a large variety of local cuisine. After researching everything from the Grand Canyon to tree house resorts, the one destination that remains a family favorite is the beach.

The beach is the one vacation activity that truly has something for everyone in the family. The water itself can provide hours of entertainment keeping the action lovers of the family busy and occupied. The beach offers plenty of opportunities for people watching, socializing and shopping to the delight of nearly any teenager. Those looking for rest and relaxation can melt away in a lounge chair with the soothing sound of the ocean as a lullaby while massaging their toes in the soft warm sand and food connoisseurs will have no problem finding a cornucopia of restaurants that offer everything from fast food to fine dining.

Beaches are a delight that can be enjoyed after dark as well. When the chaos has died down and many vacationers have retired to their accommodations for the night, we enjoy walking along the beach, watching the sun set on the horizon as evening gives way to a starry night sky, watching the lights of ocean vessels as they disappear over the horizon, drawing pictures and messages in the sand and even turning the occasional cartwheel or two. It's amazing how the beach and the breeze can make you feel youthful and carefree.

In addition to what the beach holds for each individual family member, the beach also offers families the variety of traveling to many different destinations. There is no need to vacation on the same beach year after year. Beaches can be found north and south, east and west, domestic and abroad. Every beach is different in atmosphere and offers different prospects. You could visit a different beach destination every year for a lifetime and never experience all that each one has to offer.

There are many places in America and abroad that I'm sure are a sight to behold and many that are on my bucket list to visit, but for now the beach continues to be my family's favorite vacation activity. The beach is a destination that can fulfill the wishes of any family. A natural beauty that is provided to us free of charge with no line to stand in, very little dress code, and no reservations required.
