The Beaches of Tumbes, Peru

Visit Some of Peru's Most Beautiful Beaches

Kelly de Borda
Peru is a country known for its mountains, archeology and jungles, but many people forget that it also has an amazing coastline, with ample opportunity for all sorts of adventure - or relaxation. The northern beaches in particular are famous for their beauty and warmth. Near the border with Ecuador, the Tumbes region of Peru offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, with green palms and plenty of sun.

Zorritos - This beach is located on KM 1240 of the Pan-American Highway North, and is considered by many to be one of the prettiest beaches in Peru, with warm waters and year-round sun. While the white sand beach is great for a lazy day of sunbathing (remember your sunscreen!), Zorritos is also an ideal spot for travelers who like active sports like surfing, personal watercraft and deep sea fishing. When you get hungry, visit the 'El Brujo' restaurant (open every day for lunch and dinner service) and enjoy a beautiful ocean view while you discover the joys of ceviche de concha negra (black mussel ceviche). When you're ready to get off the beach, travel a short distance from Zorritos to the small town of Bocapan; here you can visit the Hervideros - thermal spring baths said to have curative powers.

Punta Sal - This beach is situated at KM 1187 of the Pan-American North, about an hour by car from the city of Tumbes. It's famous for the beautiful houses and hotels that have been built here; it's definitely a favorite beach of the wealthy or famous. This long stretch of coastline is divided into three sections - Punta Sal Chica, Punta Azul, and Punta Sal Grande. The warm, crystal clear waters are attractive to tourist of all types, especially during the warm summer months of January and February. In Punta Sal, you'll find fishermen heading out very early in the morning, armed with nets and poles. It's also an ideal beach for snorkeling and diving - there are occasional whale sightings.

Cancas - Located at KM 1193 of the Pan-American North, the beaches around Cancas offer year round warm weather and nearly always have great surf - especially in the summer. If you're an expert surfer, try Peña Redonda, a short distance away at KM 1210. It's recommended that for the best surfing you hit the waves early in the morning. There are no accommodations here, but it's easy to reach by taxi or bus from Zorritos or Mancora.

If you decide to include a trip to the coast of Tumbes, you'll find beaches to fit any lifestyle - sunny beaches of white sand for relaxing, and warm, clear blue waters for all sorts of fun activities, far from the contaminated waters that are often found by the larger cities. Don't miss it!
