The beagle is a fairly popular pet due to it's size, usually small to mid size. The most popular beagle ever? Snoopy of course! The beagle can be traced back to medieval times and is perhaps even older than that. The name Beagle comes from uncertain backgrounds but is thought to mean, "open throat" or "open wide", no doubt referring to it's distinctive bellow of a bark. There is no other breed in the world with this specific bellow. They are also known for other vocalizations such as howling. Beagles are very much pack animals and do not like to be alone for any length of time. He will become destructive or depressed if not given the proper attention. It's just unnatural for them to be alone. He is more needy of companionship than most breeds.
Although the beagle comes in many, many colors, they appear most commonly tri-colored in white, black and light brown. These dogs are a happy bunch who enjoy playtime even as adults. They love children and are not likely to even accidentally, harm a child. Beagles like to run and play with the family and toys or even other animals. You will want to keep a close eye on your beagle as they do tend to wander. Beagles come in two sizes, under 13 inches tall and about 20 pounds or 13-15 inches tall and 20-30 pounds.
This breed is a natural runner who enjoys exercise and room to run. Don't over exercise a young beagle. However, many strictly house beagles can become obese so make sure he eats right and gets some exercise. It is very important to teach a beagle the come command, especially if used for hunting or he may never return, as he gets so intent on the chase. It is a good idea to have your puppy attend obedience classes or otherwise get them very good training. The ears will need special care and attention along with regular baths and brushing.
They will not normally bark continuously for no reason. Properly socialized beagles will usually be outgoing and not nervous or shy. A beagle who is healthy and has yearly vet visits can live up to 15 years with the average being 10-13 years. Beagles are not for everyone and not recommended for one pet homes unless he or she will always have human company.
