It has been estimated that, everyday, 8000 people die from HIV/AIDS, 6000 of those people are in Africa alone. In some countries, 30% of the working population is dying from this terrible disease. AIDS affects everyone, whether you have the disease or not. The most tragic part of the AIDS story is that it is preventable and treatable, and we have the technology to find a vaccine. Yet, the richer governments of the world are seemingly unwilling to give the necessary funds. Of the G8, the U.S. gives the least amount of money.
Over the next few months, I am going to be writing letters to our elected officials, with a goal of writing every member of Congress. I will be imploring our government to pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan. I will be asking them to use a portion the money that was being spent on the "War on Terror" to instead go towards a battle worth fighting--AIDS research and debt relief in Africa.
This is only a beginning.
