As we enjoy food preparation and the culinary arts, or perhaps just a tasty meal, we may not always take into consideration the wonders our food and herbs can truly do for us and the health and well-being of our bodies.
An example is an everyday herb in our pantry, Basil. We may often use it, once it has been dried and ground for a seasoning in various Italian dishes and even fish and poultry dishes.
Some culinary arts enjoy it as a fresh garnish or in fresh salads and even some fruit salad blends for the texture and taste enhancement.
However, exploring further we discover the medicinal benefits used for many years as well, as a natural tea, using the leaves, to relieve digestive concerns and for its anti-gas properties, as it is part of the mint family. (1)
Herbalists have even recommended it for various concerns such as headaches, stomach cramps, constipation, anxiety and vomiting. There has even been some notation of Basil having a bit of a sedative effect and has been recommended for drinking at the end of a stressful, long day to relax and unwind. (1)
Basil has been researched and founded to have natural anti-inflammatory compounds, which are also found in Oregano, which is believed to combat bowel inflammation and rheumatoid arthritis.
Naturopathic doctors believe Basil to have supported and thus subscribe it in treatment with diabetes, respiratory disorders, allergies, impotence and infertility. Basil is founded to contain cinnamanic acid, which is considered to enhance circulation, stabilize blood sugar and improve the breathing in those with the respiratory difficulties.
As Basil is considered very high in antioxidants, especially when used as an extract or oil, it protects the body from free radicals that are more related with the aging process, most forms of cancer and some skin ailments. Antioxidants are an important part of keeping the body healthy. Various scientific researches have shown how this combination is great for the increase and protection of the immune system.
So the next time you consider reaching for your medicine cabinet, you may consider your kitchen cabinet too.
