Eric Bailey
Although budgeting is a rather widely used tool for businesses and even individuals, many people still do not understand the purpose or the worth of developing and maintaining a budget. The basic premise of their doubt is understandable; after all, if your spending habits are consistent and you are actively trying to save, what different does a budget make if it does not change the bottom line? Primarily, a budget provides a quantifiable metric to evaluate fiscal performance, which can offer a few specific key benefits.

Spending Insights

Especially in the realm of personal finance, consumers are often astounded to learn how they are spending their money, and to what extent, when the begin responsibly tracking their expenses. They may realize, for example, that they are spending a couple hundred bucks a month on restaurant trips they could cut back on, or that their rampant movie-going habits need to shift toward more economical choices like rentals or the library. Whether it is big issues of thousands of dollars or seeking to squeeze every penny, seeing one's spending on a spreadsheet can be quite an eye-opener.

A budget can be planned at any time for a year out, then altered for accuracy after a few steady months have passed. Once trends are noted and patterns emerge, future spending can actually be predicted, to an extent. This allows an individual or organization to foresee and anticipate costs, enabling better decision-making for bottom-line health.

Adjustment Control

These adjustments can create opportunities for more timely investments, or can cause wise holders to be conservative for a period of time when they know a significant expense is approaching, or countless other positive decision-making ideas Since every line item can be changed, either higher or lower, the options are vast: By tweaking different numbers, the entire "feel" of an organization can be changed, with shifting focuses and paradigms. Perhaps for one quarter a company should invest in more capital to gain higher returns, or maybe an individual can shift spending from recreation to mortgage in order to erase the loan two years sooner.

The uses of a budget are flexible, and will be different for every entity. For all of them, however, a well-maintained budget is of critical importance, serving to shine a revealing light on finances in order to more precisely and more intelligently make money decisions. A responsible budget can create financial freedom, which is a high priority on anybody's list.
