The Benefits of Chigong

Chigong, also known as Qigong, is a powerful energy healing technique tracing back to ancient times. To get an understanding of the technique we must first understand the origin of the name. Chi means the life force, or vital energy. Gong means discipline, study, manipulation and exercise. Combining both words translates into the manipulation of vital energy.

Let's further explore chi, and its relevance. Chi in our body, and the entire universe for that matter, represents life. Without chi there is no life. If you have strong chi in your body, you have good health. If your body has a weakened immune system, your chi level is low. Chi can be sensed and even seen, but not by everyone. With training, most everyone is able to recognize chi.

There are six different kinds of chi which exist in our bodies. Gu Chi, or grain chi, generates our body's energy. Kong chi, or air-in-lung, incorporates our energy. Zan chi, meaning, between all organs, represents our body's original energy. Wei chi, the guarding energy, occupies the surface of our skin. Xie chi, the blood chi, maintains the body's temperature. The Jun chi, sperm and egg producing chi, represents the reproductive energy.

For those that are able to identify chi, its color is described as an assortment of colors including grey, green, white, yellow, purple and red. People that have low chi (often those that are sick) are said to produce a murky grey color. Healthy chi produces more radiant colors. Feelings of warmth are commonly recognized as healing chi. On the other hand, a chill, pain, itching even itchiness represents negative chi.

There are five common techniques associated with Chigong, although there are literally millions of styles. The five traditional techniques are: the Tao's Chigong, the foundation of the Chinese Chigong; the Buddha Chigong which originated in India; the Confucius Chigong developed from Confucianism; and the Medical Chigong used in medical practice and martial arts. These different styles have different effects.

Now that you have an understanding of what Chigong is, and the different styles associated with it, let's examine how Chigong is used in healing. As we learned earlier, the body's energy flow is also called the chi. Many illnesses are caused by blockages in these channels. Through the practice of Chigong techniques, healing can take place. The healing may include pain relief, improved intelligence, even prolonging life. Not only does Chigong promote healing, it can prevent illness.

Chigong is easy to learn. Through breathing, concentration and physical movements you will connect with your body and spirit. Once you are comfortable with the technique, you will be able to improve your memory, slow the aging process, increase your stamina, and even promote healing within yourself. With practice, you will not only use the method of yourself, but will be able to use the technique on others.

Chigong techniques are used by millions of practitioners. They commonly treat illnesses including migraines, hypertension, digestive disorders, diabetes, stress, insomnia, impaired sexuality, and immune system dysfunction. The study of Chigong is practiced in some cancer treatment facilities throughout the world, with proven success.

Persons trained in the Chigong methods have testified of its success. Bill Payne, a retired scientist, says that Chigong helped him recover from hearing loss and knee surgery. Paul Aikon, Ph.D and a prominent psychologist confirm that the practice of Chigong has benefited his life in many ways. A patient suffering from migraine headaches for years is cured after practicing Chigong. Other people have testified that after practicing these methods, they are able to accurately predict natural disasters including hurricanes.

Some people express concern that Chigong will conflict with their religious beliefs. This is easily clarified with the understanding that these techniques are simply an art of healing. They've been asked if Chigong is dangerous. With proper teaching and guidance, it is safer than many exercises. They've been asked if the Chigong methods can be taught to people with limited physical abilities. There are different forms used with Chigong, an important one being special breathing techniques. Many Chigong styles require no body movement at all.

There are many benefits to incorporating Chigong methods into your life. With an open mind and a positive attitude, you can reap the rewards of Chigong.
