As an avid home cook, I'm addicted to cookware and fancy kitchen gadgets. I've purchased many kitchen items over the years in kitchen specialty shops, department stores, discount stores such as Wal-Mart, online, and even in foreign countries such as Thailand and India. I've owned more than my fair share of George Foreman grills, and my kitchen cabinets and drawers are overflowing with cookware and gadgets.
Read on to find out why I'm abandoning new and modern gadgets for Lodge Logic cast iron.
Lodge Logic Cast Iron Cookware is Made in America
I'm not opposed to buying and using products made in different countries. In fact, I've lived in different countries and even imported some items from India to resell in America. However, particularly in light of the current economy, and the number of Americans who are unemployed, it feels pretty darn good to buy products that are 100% made in America. (Note: Lodge Logic products that are covered with enamel are made in China. I'm only buying the Lodge Logic cast iron cookware that is not enameled.)
In addition to supporting an American company, American made products are often of better quality than products made overseas, particularly in countries where labor is cheap. Harmful toxins have also often been found in products made in some countries overseas. In order to insure that the cast iron cookware I purchase is of the highest quality and meets rigid American health standards, I prefer to buy cast iron cookware that is made in the U.S.A. This is not to say that cookware made in other countries is automatically inferior, but I can purchase cookware from an American company such as Lodge with confidence in the high standards associated with the company.
Reputable Company
Lodge Logic Cast Iron is a reputable company. Founded in 1896 by Joseph Lodge, Lodge Cast Iron has stood the test of time. A company doesn't stay in business for well over 100 years unless customers are satisfied with the products and service.
Lodge Manufacturing has received numerous awards for eco-responsibility over the years. Among other things, Lodge Manufacturing recycles cardboard, has updated its cupola melting system with an induction melting system that is more environmentally friendly, reuses foundry sand, and works to support plant and animal life on its property.
Cast Iron Cookware Is Made to Last
Lodge Logic cast iron cookware is known to last and is often passed down from generation to generation. Some of the cast iron cookware made more than a hundred years ago is still in use today.
I personally decided to make the change to cast iron cookware after the need to regularly replace expensive trendy cookware every few years. Since I cook a lot, my pots and pans take a beating, and before I know it, even the most expensive cookware starts to wear out and has to be replaced. It feels great to use cookware that I will be able to pass down to my kids and grandkids.
Cast iron cookware that has been mistreated and is rusted can simply be sanded down, seasoned again, and put back to use.
Versatile
Cast iron cookware is far more versatile than most other cookware. It can go from the stove top to the oven without any problem, so it's perfect for recipes that call for braising and then baking. It can even be used in barbecue grills and over campfires.
Health Benefits of Cooking With Cast Iron
Lodge cast iron cookware is free of harmful chemicals found in cookware that is coated with Teflon, so there is less concern about bits and pieces of the coating from the pan getting into food. Small amounts of iron is imparted to the food that is cooked in cast iron cookware, so cooking with cast iron is an excellent way to add supplemental iron to a diet.
(Note: I am not in any way associated with Lodge Manufacturing and I do not personally know anyone who works for the company.)
